moobot83: i think you should have to have a minimum of 3 purchased games in your library and over 20 hours played on games you own, this will get rid of the spammers as they wont wanna have to invest time or money to spam some random adverts i nthe forums,

what do you guys think
I think 1 owned game(paid for) to post in general forums would work.....as spammers wouldn't likely use the subforums due to minimal returns from spamming those.

Also for anyone saying this is unfair: If you come to GOG you should buy some of their stuff.....to me this is fair for using their site.

(Also BreOl72 in Post#4 makes a good set of ideas that would also work well, imo)

InkPanther: Ridiculous. It not only cuts off potential customers from posting on the forum, it cuts off customers who bought a game or two, and above that it cuts off anybody who doesn't use Galaxy.
To be fair, many customers don't even use the forums and likely wouldn't notice.

The spammers do occasionally hit the subforums, though not in the mass quantity usually seen in GD. :)

BreOl72: I agree with a minimum of one game that must be purchased here, before you can open a new thread.

Plus: the opportunity to create a new thread must be limited to one thread/day in their first month here, two threads/day in their second month here...up to - let's say - a maximum of five new threads/day after six months.

And that restriction (five new threads/day) should be for everyone.

There's no way anyone needs to open up more than five threads per day...not for normal purposes, anyway.

Also, fuck it, why the hell am I still auto-downrepped? What have I done?
I think your semi-suggesting gog do nothing to stop the spam just to be overly kind to every user isn't going well with some people.

BreOl72: Of course, there's some probability that you wouldn't need these three threads in the first place, because for the two questions you have, you might find the answer already in the dedicated games' forums...
This. I wish more people would check the game subforums and the general forums as well(like the FAQ threads and such) before making threads that have already been made and/or been answered. It would save so much time and effort for some.

Bookwyrm627: The spammer can just wait for one of the sales and spend $10 to buy games for 100 accounts using a $0.10 game (and if one of these games is a loss leader for the sale, then GOG may well be losing money).

This thread creation limit would be horrendously frustrating for users and it is barely a speed bump for spammers. Don't harm legit users, especially impressionable newbies that you're trying to attract, while trying to solve the spammer problem with bad solutions.

Rando newbie might find the answer, or the answer might be buried some unknown number of pages back. That assumes the answer to their specific question exists on the forum at all.
1st bit: Has ANY paid game ever gone that cheap? Most times the cheapest games i've seen are one dollar, and buying one for each account would likely cut their profits from spamming down considerably.

2nd bit: Most users don't use the forums and use support tickets or email.....also imo they would be fair and do a good amount to curb the spam.

3rd bit: They should search harder, then, or use support tickets. I can usually find a solution here or via google quite easily for most issues, or support usually has answers.

Cambrey: A 2 hour delay, or so, before you can start a new thread should be enough to slow down the invasion, letting enough time for the GoG staff to take action.
Multiple accounts could get around this, in theory.

bler144: And put yourself in the shoes of Wyrm's hypothetical new customer - do you want to wait 2 hours to even post (much less get a response) when you are in the moment of having bought/installed a new game and want to play it? Probably not.
Imo waiting 2 hours to ask staff something(which can also be done by support ticket/etc btw) is fair(or even just an hour). People can wait an hour to ask something, imo....it's not like their lives depend on playing that game in most cases.

True, but as you said not as much as not many visit them.

> semi-suggesting
Take the "semi-" off and you're good to go! Yes, I say they do nothing. It's either restrictions that don't bode well for GOG getting fresh blood, or updating the forum software. Since the latter is not going to happen, and GOG would sensibly not go the route of the former...yes, the best we got is to delete that spam whenever it pops up. The spammer will eventually disappear, at least for a fair bit of time, and we lose nothing.
Oh no, you're back from forced forum vacation...

Let's go one step further - GOG doesn't have to deal with spammers or trolls because only a small fraction of their customers is affected.

It might have been dlc or something, but I'm pretty certain I've occasionally seen items run that ridiculously low before. I've bought games for under a dollar more than once (high discounts on cheap games). Your call on whether you believe my unsubstantiated anecdote.

Just because something doesn't harm the majority doesn't mean the policy is okay.

1st bit: To buy most if not all DLC you need to buy the base game, and that usually costs more than the DLC does....even on sale.

2nd bit: I believe in majority rule(while being still fair to a degree to the rest).....if the minority of people have to wait a bit to post on a game forum what's the big deal?

3rd bit: They should stop being lazy or dependant on others, then.

Is there something I am missing about the "limit the number of threads a user can make" suggestion? What is stopping a spammer from just making numerous accounts, including over a long period of time, and then using them to flood pages of the forum? Practically, the effect with numerous accounts making such topics would be the same as one account making all the topics.

You'd need a combination of things, like some said. Possibly a thread per day limit(maybe 4) and also one has to buy 1 game to post in general forums(else all one can do is post in the other subforums) would work, along with other measures.

I personally don't think a spammer would spend 1 dollar per account to keep spamming, as they get much less per thread posted.

Correcto. I could be wrong, but a lot of those spammers use the same account (like the last one we got a couple days ago, for instance). Stopping them would take multiple measures, for sure.

I think(as I have said a few times) a multi-tiered approach of thread limits for accounts(3 or so threads per day per acct), one paid game(1 dollar or more) needed to post in general forums, and a dedicated forum mod could work wonders.

Also allow users to hide threads of users they dislike from their forum view to mitigate spam from being shown until it gets deleted and everyone would be happy.
avatar
falloutttt: GOG already stated that they are not going to do anything about it, and simply remove those post manually.
Can you provide a link or an idea where this is posted?

It's because we LOOOOVE spammers.
