Wow, that was unnecessarily aggressive.

micla: Anyone knows where the user.settings file is located? It always was in my documents/witcher 3 folder, but there is no such folder anymore.
Should still be there along with an extra dx12user.settings.

racofer: Part 8 is still broken and giving error 404. The other parts, however, are working.
avatar
olnorton: With part 8, you just need to put the missing / between classic and setup and it will download.
Isn't it kind of funny how professionals who get paid for this are unable to realize this? ;)

Just in case CDPR is reading here as well:

It still is not possible to rebind "sprint" when inside a boat. You will always have to use left shift to make the boat faster. I reported this years ago and was kind of hoping that they would fix/add this - which they did not.

pkk234: Damn that sucks. I'm assuming there are mods that do the same thing right? Since that's where they got most of this update.

What a shitshow. Do games ever get tested anymore before release. I see more and more tweet post launch about fixing this or that/we are aware of some shit.

StingingVelvet: I don't really see any negative to the update other than DX12 performance, and the DX11 version is fine.
Interestingly, I'm getting better performance in DX12 than I am in DX11 (obviously with RTX off in DX12 as it just kills the 2070s, even on low)

StingingVelvet: [...] or updated TAA.
They've added TAA, improved vegetation and Ultra+ settings in the updated dx11 version as well, so there's really no need to suffer the performance loss of dx12 for any of it. All that you are losing by not using dx12 is FSR/DLSS and of course RT.

HappyPunkPotato: Wow, that was unnecessarily aggressive.
Must be related to years of exposure to gratuitous violence in video games or something :P. Besides, he did not use ALL CAPS, so he was saying it in a normal, polite, tone.

I have been all over the net. There is no next gen update. GoG says this. The excitement couldn’t get any higher, and we couldn’t wait any longer. Finally, here it is — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Next-Gen Update has arrived on GOG and it’s free for every owner of the game! That link takes me to a buy it for 9.99 ... I already own the game. I could not find it in the Witcher 3 game files section. GoG tech support is useless... that tech bot asked me for the game title 3 times and I typed in witcher 3 wild hunt 3 times and it said....it was not sure what game title I was talking about. It's a useless app that should have never been created.

Um..I'm not sure how you can't find it. Every version of the Witcher 3 has been updated so just download your existing game from https://www.gog.com/en/account

If you don't see it there check you don't have a filter on that is hiding what games are shown.

That's not too surprising if your bottleneck is the CPU rather than the GPU.

For those (like myself) who are unable to activate photomode, here is the fix

I'm running a Ryzen 3700X - it's not new, so I suppose it could be causing a bottleneck.

It's quite possible. Because the chief advantage of DX12/Vulkan over older APIs like DX11/OpenGL is their ability to take advantage of multi-threading. A DX12/Vulkan app can more effectively use multiple CPU cores to saturate the GPU with data to work on so the graphics card is never sitting around waiting on the CPU to give it something to do.

I have a 7700x and the cpu is technically the bottleneck. The DX12 version is just incredibly poorly optimized, it's not either of our faults.

Until they fix it or PCs improve enough to power through it just play on DX11 and enjoy the new shadows/TAA/draw distance.

According to the vkd3d-proton devs, the dx12 rendering logic is single threaded (much like its dx11 counterpart always was), so there should be no surprise it's CPU bottlenecked, pegging on one core.

It's actually my first playthrough - I've been waiting for the update (I finished my replay of W2 in early 2021 and was waiting for it to finally be released)

Especially since the DX 12 version we are talking about is not a real DX 12 version. It uses D3D11on12 which is slow and according to Microsoft has lots of CPU and memory overhead (and slight GPU overhead as well). Even if D3D11on12 was fast, it has to be slower than directly using the DX 11 version unless the DX 11 support of the graphics driver is very very very bad.

No, it does not. That dll is not even loaded on Linux and I'm not really sure why it's even there (maybe something they used for debugging initially but forgot to remove?). The new dx12 renderer is d3d12 native, but with probably a lot of the d3d11 code ported over with too little optimization.
