muntdefems: Apparently the just-released-on-Steam Shenmue I & II can be made DRM-free with the 'steam_appid.txt trick':

MarkoH01: Careful. According to this post from the same thread it should not work anymore with the latest beta.
When you first download this game from Steam does it automatically apply the beta or does it have to update it after the download? For example, let's say I just downloaded Alpha Protocol after which Steam starts to update it. I pause the update and move the directory somewhere else so the update fails to apply.

Unfortunately I cannot give you an answer here since I don't own the game myself. I cannot even tell you if what is stated in the thread really is true. Somebody who owns the game will have to answer this. But anyway afaik there is a possibility to download older versions of any game on Steam using the steam console as well.

Hmm. That's good. Is that the Steam CLI type program or it's actually something built into the client itself? Either way, I'm off to investigate. I was just thinking out loud about the console question but hopefully someone who actually has the game would be able to answer my question but I do appreciate your reply, Marko. Thank you for looking out.

pedrovay2003: Hey, just letting everyone know that I'm still here, and I'll update the wiki soon. I have to go out of town because of a death in the family, so I'll get to it soon here, hopefully this weekend.
Thank you, pedrovay for keeping the wiki updated. As of now, this is the best source for client-free Steam games.

Edit: Okay, I got it.

The beta version of a game is not automatically applied until it's out of beta. If you download the game right now, it should still be the DRM-free version; if you back it up, you'll always have it (that's what I did, and I'll keep that version as long as nothing really significant is added to the game along with the Steam DRM).

I wonder if you still tested the beta and if you can confirm that they have added Steam DRM with it?

I can do that, hang on a second.

EDIT: Okay, I can confirm that the beta version of Shenmue I & II currently available does indeed add Steam Client DRM into the game; the game can no longer be run without Steam. :/ At least there's still no Denuvo, though, which was going to happen before it was patched out right at launch.

Thank you for checking that. You have no idea how much I appreciate that. I'm so glad I could back up the game now and have no worry. Thank you, again. This is great news.

Update: I've downloaded the game and backed it up. I can also confirm that when you download it avoid updating it and running it directly via the games .exe, it runs without the client. Going to do the same with Hat in Time in case they decide to suddenly update that and add client dependence.

Okay, we're all caught up again! :D I left Shenmue off for now, since it seems like Steam DRM is going to be added back in; we'll know for sure after the latest update comes out, which should be within the week. I'll test it again then.

I can confirm that the new, non-beta version of Shenmue now uses Steam client DRM. :/

Graveyard Keeper

Tested on Windows 7.
I just noticed in the GOG update thread that Freedom Planet has been updated here offering additional languages. So I went to my Steam account to make sure the game still is runnable without the Steam client after the update as well. I am glad to confirm Freedom Planet still runs without Steam even after the recent update :)
