babark: Can someone verify if Morrowind works without steam if you use the graphics mod program (forget its name)?
I have Morrowind right now, but the program is several GBs larger than the game itself, so I can't really test it now.
Without any mods, Morrowind does not work without steam. Kinda weird that they bothered DRMing such an old game, but whatever.

I suppose I should get the game on gog anyhow, but I was hoping I'd be able to use what I have already :D.
If the game has a steam_api.dll file you can try replacing it with one of the known DRM-Free games. Rise of the Triad (2013) for example has such a file.

Title says "play" not "download" the games without the Steam client. You need the client to download the game once. After that you can just copy and past the files to any PC and play the games without Steam. So no the title of this thread isn`t misleading.

Nope. No such file in the Morrowind directory. Nor a SteamworksNative.dll. Which is why I find it so strange- Bethesda actively changed their release of Morrowind (a game over 10 years old) to include DRM so as to make it unplayable without steam.
Someone told me that the Morrowind Graphics mod program replaces the exe, so I was wondering if using that bypasses the DRM.

Some do, though they may not be required and/or recreated when the game is run. For the rest, take a look at installscript.vdf to see what is added, and add it yourself.

People keep saying that some games do make registry changes, but personally, I haven't come across a single one, and I've tried every one of my own DRM-free Steam games on different PCs myself.

I guess I haven't bought a lot of old games through Steam to test that, then. I just know that nothing I've personally tried has ever given me any issues, so I guess I'm lucky there.

Even if you don't consider the DRM stuff at all, Steam does more seem to be good for people who want the latest games and GoG is good for the oldies anyway.

Both RC Mini Racers & Turbo Pug seems to be DRM-Free, ran them under Wine and they didn't complain any bit. RC Mini Racers even looked better under wine as what it does under windows

Racer 8 seems to run fine without steam, ran it under wine without complaints

Installers, no, far as I know. But downloading on one PC, even with another OS, yes. Just found out about it. Here's the thread.

Actually some games do provide installers - Darksiders for instance. Really need to get a list of them together as well to compliment this one.
