Blood - This game is so much fun, it's an old-school shooter, so it's all about shooting everything that moves, finding keys to unlock doors, you can find secret places on the map. The weapons are also among my favorite weapons in any games. You got flair guns, voodoo dolls, spraycan + lighter, and you can throw bundles of dynamite. The theme of the game is horror, but I never found it be scary, even when I played it as a kid. This is one of my favorite shooters, can totally recommend.

Painkiller - This game is more linear, but a lot of fun! You are locked in parts of the map, and you can proceed after you have killed everything (there are sometimes hundreds of enemies on a level). It is a very fast game, and if you bunnyhop you'll probably reach speeds over 100 km/h :P The weapons here are also fantastic, one of the guns even shoots poles that impale your enemies :D Also totally recommended.
Quake 4
good idea for a thread!

unfortunately GOG is still not strong with FPSes but the year so far has been very good

i've been playing shooters since the beginning and until 2004...
and then we know what happened...

so prior to 2004 i think i had a good understanding of FPSes
since 2004 and with the introduction of DRM i consider myself an ignorant cause i almost don't buy/play any new FPSes so i don't have a clue about what is going on

the fpses being sold on GOG i would recommend
painkiller
serious sam fe/se
fear
far cry
dark forces
jedi knight
red faction
sin
Unreal 1 can be very Horror-ish most of the time .
Best shooters for multiplayer or offline match against bots, from my experience are:

1. Unreal Tournament 2004

2. Quake Live - which is F2P

3. Counter-Strike: Source
While many people here have already recommended shooters I myself would recommend, I'd like to point you and others this channel here on youtube:

GGGManLives

Almost all of his videos are reviews of FPS games, and he has a mostly unique and interesting view on most of them.

He is a good reviewer, has a few more controversial opinions but atleast he back it up.
I'd also recommend Quake 4.
I am not a huge fan of shooter, so it means a lot when i adore one. Like :

- No one lives forever

- Aliens vs Predator (the 1999 version)

- FEAR

- XIII

- Outlaws

To some extent :

- Dark Corners of Earth

- Far Cry

And if they qualify :

- System shock 2

- Deus Ex

- Stalker

- Max Payne 1 and 2

I've played many more but even the classics like Unreal, Doom, etc, tend to bore me.

Edit :

I would recommend Nosferatu and Undying too, for their unforgettable flavors, although Nosferatu is a bit roguelike (procedurally built castle, but still, efficiently scary) and I had expected more narrative-adventure elements from Undying (which is indeed a pure shooter, so, fine once you go for that).

Wait, you say you actually enjoyed Cybermage? OMG!

Some recommendations:

- Prey, it's a bit of a Quake 4 / Portal hybrid.
- System Shock 2 or Bioshock, depending on you want to play a modern or older FPS.
- Shogo, very cool manga style giant robot FPS, maybe Slave Zero too, altough it is played in 3rd person.
- Stalker series, if you want atmosphere in your games look no further, also I find sounds and general feel of the weapons better than in most games.
- Zeno Clash 1+2, not very much shooters but beat'em'ups in a highly original fantasy world.
- Portal 1+2, not shooters but great puzzlegames with an entertaining plotline.

Is Quake 4 available digitally anywhere?

Quake 3 Arena will always have a special place in my heart. I've spent so much time on those maps, they almost feel like a second home.
If you've enjoyed the original Doom (2), you should definitely go for Heretic and Hexen too.
Also, Quake (1) is IMO one of the best shooters of all time, and with a nice gothic touch. From there you can go on to Hexen II and Quake II.

darthspudius: Can't do shooters with out the Half life games of course. Unique for their time and still fun as hell!
^This.

Game.co.uk have Half-Life and Half Life 2 downloads (Steam) for £1.75 each, about €2.40. Not sure if it applies outside the UK though.

I'd recommend Max Payne 3, that's one excessively hardass and cool shooter.
