Meteor shower. Stop. People are dying. Stop. Send help. Stop.

The 2001 first-person 3D shooter Venom. Codename: Outbreak, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spiritual predecessor by GSC Game World, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows.

You are sent to investigate the site of a meteor shower that left no survivors - after the scientists, followed by a military squad, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Could it be aliens, or just a form of mass psychosis? That’s for you to find out.

In Venom. Codename: Outbreak your squad will be a very candid affair - just you and another soldier to watch your back. Fortunately, everyone on base is the best of the best and the AI of the game’s NPCs got many a word of praise, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them not doing their job. Should something start to go wrong, you can easily switch characters and take control of your partner - or play through the missions with a friend in 2-player LAN co-op mode. Sometimes, this will be one of the keys to getting through a mission alive.

Try to solve the mystery of the valley showered with meteors in Venom. Codename: Outbreak DRM-free at GOG.com - and most of all, try to get back alive.

What does the press say?

“Crawling across the forest floor to tag a one-shot kill on a guard whose head was barely visible in a tower at 186 meters is a thrill unlike any other.” -- GameSpy

“Outbreak seems almost surreally whimsical in its treatment of a special forces vs. alien conflict.” -- Game Over Online

“Codename: Outbreak is a fun game. Especially the later missions in the campaign which are particularly atmospheric and intense, requiring careful picking of character skills and meticulous execution of strategies.” -- Play.tm
Is Firestarter next? That's the only GSC shooter still missing.

vicklemos: Wow, 2002 and laptops were already a thing, huh?

timppu: ... In fact, I even have faint memories seeing someone playing the original Wolfenstein 3D on an ancient laptop which had a B&W LCD screen. That must have been in the early 90s, 1992 probably. It actually ran on it pretty ok (little sluggish though), but since the LCD display was so laggy, the B&W graphics were all messy when moving around. Wow, the memories.
That reminds me, I had a laptop from 1995 that I used to play Doom on all the time. The laptop was huge, had a small screen with 256 color, PC speaker sound, and got extremely hot, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever back then.

Aaah... I didn't even see that. I guess laptops were the coolest thing back then.

Yeah, NOLF actually ran pretty ok on that (Compaq?) laptop where I played it back in 2002 or so. I recall that if I enabled all the graphics options, some lightning effects would get wonky, so I had to disable some visual effects in order to play it on that laptop. Apparently its mobile graphics chipset didn't quite have all the required Direct3D features. Other than that, it was great.

There is also the GSC-developed Hover Ace, but it's currently published by Strategy First.

As they are now! For me, a laptop in 2002 was something beyond some wild dream!

Firestarter is an old fav of mine. Was it a hit outside Ukraine/EU?

Smannesman: There was also a sequel right?

zeffyr: Nope.
Ah I think I'm thinking of Chrome and Chrome Specforce.

Those were developed by Polish Techland. Quite similiar games though :-)
I totally forgot that game exists. One of my friends had it and we played it. :)

On-topic: nifty release, but what I really want is GOG L(os) A(ngeles) to storm Activision (that's like a half-hour drive I think) and rescue/buy missing IP. 'Bout time we get Freddy Pharkas here.

GOG.com. Securing releases, SWAT style.
Thank you GOG, this is a real GOG game and I hope there will be more real GOG games released soon :-)

I have a retail copy and It's called Codename Outbreak.

The name Venom was dropped prior to the games retail release.

Does this GOG release include the 2.0 and 2.1 patches?

GOG.com: ...
So.. is it "Venom. Codename: Outbreak" or "Venom: Codename Outbreak", this is important.
