Meteor shower. Stop. People are dying. Stop. Send help. Stop.

The 2001 first-person 3D shooter Venom. Codename: Outbreak, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spiritual predecessor by GSC Game World, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows.

You are sent to investigate the site of a meteor shower that left no survivors - after the scientists, followed by a military squad, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Could it be aliens, or just a form of mass psychosis? That’s for you to find out.

In Venom. Codename: Outbreak your squad will be a very candid affair - just you and another soldier to watch your back. Fortunately, everyone on base is the best of the best and the AI of the game’s NPCs got many a word of praise, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them not doing their job. Should something start to go wrong, you can easily switch characters and take control of your partner - or play through the missions with a friend in 2-player LAN co-op mode. Sometimes, this will be one of the keys to getting through a mission alive.

Try to solve the mystery of the valley showered with meteors in Venom. Codename: Outbreak DRM-free at GOG.com - and most of all, try to get back alive.

What does the press say?

“Crawling across the forest floor to tag a one-shot kill on a guard whose head was barely visible in a tower at 186 meters is a thrill unlike any other.” -- GameSpy

“Outbreak seems almost surreally whimsical in its treatment of a special forces vs. alien conflict.” -- Game Over Online

“Codename: Outbreak is a fun game. Especially the later missions in the campaign which are particularly atmospheric and intense, requiring careful picking of character skills and meticulous execution of strategies.” -- Play.tm
Don't remember even hearing about this title, but looks interesting. Wishlisted for now
I actually own the physical copy of this.. no idea where it is though.
There was also a sequel right?
The most important question: Does it support widescreen resolutions?
"What does the press say? "
Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Something vintage I can play on my system! Also it looks like a really groovy shooter to boot.

Party!

timppu: Odd. Both the title (Codename: Outbreak) and the box front cover art feel very familiar to me, yet the game itself doesn't.

I wouldn't be surprised I have the retail version lying somewhere, but I've never just properly played it.
Wow, 2002 and laptops were already a thing, huh?

Other than optimal performance and lack of crashes with modern OS and hardware, I agree. I'm kind of in the mood to purchase it only to test if widescreen works and of course to see how much they learned in STALKER from this game.

Nope.

For quite a few years!

I got my first laptop in the late 90s, but they were definitely selling before then.

I don't think so. Originally, old games were made for 4:3/5:4 resolutions.

Here is a video of the gameplay:

Some say, the game works great on Intel HD integrated graphics:

Don't know about the GOG version, what fixes they made.
Will have to wait for reviews.
Have good memories with this game, played it before final exams in university. :D
Never heard of this one before, but that screenshot where it shows the characters' stats is intriguing enough to put on my list of "I'll have to try it out for myself" games.
Wow, never even heard of this one, and it looks really good. That's it made by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. devs cinches it, instant purchase!
WOW!
Childhood emmories...oh memories! :] Awesome game back then... and pretty hard, with solid creepy atmosphere.

I playes it with czech dub. Its time to test this game with eng dub and see if it still has this great touch :)

Thank you GOG!

Not fully sure what you are trying to say.

Albeit, that reminds me that I did play No One Lives Forever through on a laptop back then, around 2002 probably. Back then I played mostly on a desktop PC, though.

So yeah, I guess laptops were already a thang in 2002. In fact, I even have faint memories seeing someone playing the original Wolfenstein 3D on an ancient laptop which had a B&W LCD screen. That must have been in the early 90s, 1992 probably. It actually ran on it pretty ok (little sluggish though), but since the LCD display was so laggy, the B&W graphics were all messy when moving around. Wow, the memories.
