A pirate's life for me.

Sid Meier's Pirates!, the swashbuclking adventure/RPG of open-world exploration, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Who doesn't love a good pirate story? Anyone? Ok, that parrot squawk doesn't count so noone it is. But what is it that fascinates us so in these romanticized depictions of piracy? Is it the action? The adventure? The mythical treasures? The laaaadies? Well, Sid Meier's Pirates! has got all that plus another indispensable element of debonair villainy: style.

Crew up your ship and unleash your mischievous charm upon an unsuspecting Caribbean. This vast, colourful playground will soon become the backdrop to your legendary exploits as you sail, trade, plunder, swordfight, and even raid at will. Style yourself as either an agreeable privateer or a ruthless marauder and when you feel ready to settle down, make sure you don't miss the opportunity to woo a governor's comely daughter by showing off your dancing moves. Granted, parrots, hooks, and peg legs make for fine accessories, but nothing looks as good on you as the fair arm of a beautiful maiden.

Get hooked in the playfully romantic and opportunistic life of Sid Meier's Pirates!, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until April 5, 13:59 BST / 5:59 AM PDT / 8:59 AM EDT.
Oh, a special treat for us today. Gog pirate party day, gamers rejoicing everywhere, there's dancing in the streets, drinks all round.

Looks different, and has good reviews. I may try it.
I get confused. How many Sid Meiers Pirates! games were there?

Because, as everyone knows, you can't become a pirate until you RTFM. =D

Funny enough, I'm pretty sure I just replied to a post of yours in another thread.

I *think* there were three. The "modern" reimagination that Firaxis did, released today on GoG.

And then the original with those lovely old school "Zelda" graphics, plus a "reskin" of the original with some nicer cleaned up visual - but otherwise the same game.

So, modern version, original version, and one released shortly after original version, but with prettier looks. I think. I'm sure someone will jump in to clarify / correct me with the actual info rather than the "Ixamyakxim Off The Cuff Special" info ;)

Yep, afaik there are 3 PC versions.

The 1987 and 1993 versions of Pirates! are already available on GOG as Pirates! Gold Plus:

There were more versions. The first one -the original- was on the C-64. In this version you could use a trick to maximize your profit. Then there was the Amiga version, with much better graphics. Then the PC versions. and then the version which now came to GoG. :-)

correct, i had both of these like i mentioned in my first reply, the c64 was the first one as far as i know, i assume they might had a version for the other old computers in the c64 period, maybe amstrad , tandy, or zx spectrum.
The c64 at the time had better 'graphics' (cant really call it graphics as we know them today, cause it was a lot of reverse off and reverse on 'graphics').
There was a 'computer' or 'console' that seemed to use only green colors (or seriously limited colors compared to the c64) for the games, cant remember which one, or maybe it was a handheld.

In holland we had Videopac, dont know if other EU countries had it aswell, but we had it, made by Philips.
Awfull, flashy games with nasty sounds, lateron i got atari 2600, slightly better 'graphics' and sounds, but still horrible..., there was VIC 20 (commodore) .(awfull)
Anyway AMIGA came later followed by CD32, PC was my last computer, and thats when i discoverd that many flashy games ( explosions and the likes) didn't benefit my eyes (photosensitivity) and thats why i got very very carefull in selecting the games i could play without having problems. So now its only PC since win95, thats over 20 years now.

TheCycoONE: It was the sneaking into town mini-game that I grew most tired of; that and the cut scenes after every combat. I was initially annoyed that they cartooned up the game whereas the original was much more gritty and real feeling, but after playing for awhile that no longer bothered me. It is a decent remake - would be even better with the ability to disable cut scenes and disable select mini-games (in exchange for a chance at success or something).
I haven't played the original, only the remake. I see a lot of complaints about the dancing, but I actually found it kind of fun. Also, If I recall correctly, the dancing was pretty optional as you could choose not to go to the ball.

However, the sneak mini games were really the worst. I remember there being a sneak out of prison mini-game when my pirate had been captured and I failed miserably at it. Didn't it have sort of like a top down view, I think, and the control felt weird.

Other than, the sword fights, sailing on the seas, choosing factions, and the swash-buckling story were loads of fun. And digging up treasures you find with treasure maps or hunting down fugitives. There's so much to do in the game you can easily get lost if you don't keep track of your chosen objectives. Go get it if you like pirate games, folks.

Wow, this came across as more of a review than a reply, but ....yeah. :)

Of course i know that the original version was on the C64, i played that one too. And i also know about the Amiga and Atari ST versions.

I meant to say that there are 3 PC versions. ;)
For anyone interested, it seems there was a widescreen fix for the gui after all.

EDIT:

Nevermind.

The sneaking was pretty tedious, yeah.

What I like about games like this is that you can choose to follow the "story" - rescuing your kidnapped family members - but mostly you're just free to do whatever. One time I got distracted with the idea of amassing a huge pirate fleet/army and just going down the coast sacking towns and installing governors of my chosen faction.
