A pirate's life for me.

Sid Meier's Pirates!, the swashbuclking adventure/RPG of open-world exploration, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Who doesn't love a good pirate story? Anyone? Ok, that parrot squawk doesn't count so noone it is. But what is it that fascinates us so in these romanticized depictions of piracy? Is it the action? The adventure? The mythical treasures? The laaaadies? Well, Sid Meier's Pirates! has got all that plus another indispensable element of debonair villainy: style.

Crew up your ship and unleash your mischievous charm upon an unsuspecting Caribbean. This vast, colourful playground will soon become the backdrop to your legendary exploits as you sail, trade, plunder, swordfight, and even raid at will. Style yourself as either an agreeable privateer or a ruthless marauder and when you feel ready to settle down, make sure you don't miss the opportunity to woo a governor's comely daughter by showing off your dancing moves. Granted, parrots, hooks, and peg legs make for fine accessories, but nothing looks as good on you as the fair arm of a beautiful maiden.

Get hooked in the playfully romantic and opportunistic life of Sid Meier's Pirates!, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until April 5, 13:59 BST / 5:59 AM PDT / 8:59 AM EDT.

Impaler26: Yep, afaik there are 3 versions.

The 1987 and 1993 versions of Pirates! are already available on GOG as Pirates! Gold Plus:

Maxvorstadt: There were more versions. The first one -the original- was on the C-64. In this version you could use a trick to maximize your profit. Then there was the Amiga version, with much better graphics. Then the PC versions. and then the version which now came to GoG. :-)
This game feels like a C-64 game. There were several games on the C-64 that were a collection of small activities making up a larger game. The towns, the ship combat, the dancing, and the treasure hunting all feel like separate mini games.

That said, I love this game, and the 2005 version is IMO the best.

I'm still waiting for Archon and Archon Ultra on GoG.

Maxvorstadt: Isn`t it ironic? I de-installed this game just a few days ago to free up some disc space, now it comes to GoG. :D
You should do this more often with old games which aren't yet on GOG. Which classics you have else to do "de-install"? :)

You mean, I should de-install CIV IV, CIV III and CIV IV: Colonization?

Exactly! De-install them all!
Ah and just for the case you also have coincidentally Bioshock, Mafia, Vietcong, Prey and what not all installed atm ... you know your task. ;D
Nah, Archon Ultra was terrible.

Let's get Archon and Archon Classic instead...

If it's anything like the originals, it's an open world in the exact sense of the word.
You can sail everwhere in the world and do anything you want from the beginning of the game.
It's like a big pirate sand... ehh waterbox.

sounds great. i guess, that there is no player level system but instead a ship upgrade system

Well you're not bound to a ship. You can use every ship you capture and upgrade it with better stuff but it's not a real levelling system.

Cannot a remember parrots in the game but most of the time you don't see your character anyway, because that is the usual perspexctive in game outside of the land-based stuff.

Apparently so. I think AC4: Black Flag was also missing parrots....
