I'm in the same boat :) I also frequently find myself a bit mystified by its popularity, especially based on the occasional short clips I've seen.

i just re-watched the weeping angels episode (if theres more than one, it was the first, i think). it was really creepy and an episode i actual lee enjoyed! seems this game will be a good fit for me since its all about angels.

ill have to give the latest tv season(s) a go. people have collectively lost their shit so im intrigued as to why, or if i agree (or not)

Honestly, it's always been 'preachy', right from the beginning in the 60s. It's a BBC Family Friendly kidult show, that's fundamentally what they do.

The first doctor in 1963 had two female companions! And the one who wasn't the Doctor's school age niece was on the ship with an unmarried man!! Despite not being married herself!!!

Might seem a bit quaint nowadays, but it was pretty controversial for the time and resulted in many pearls being clutched and sternly worded letters to the editor being written.

The difference then was that they were more focused on writing the story first and foremost, and weaving a message into that. Recently- since they last switched show runners- they've seemingly been focused more on the moral message first and foremost, with the story being a secondary consideration and often making no sense at all, except as a means to deliver the message.

In the end, all the current problems stem from the writing, it's just so very very ham fisted about everything, though it was better in the last series up until the end. Jodie Whittaker is a good actor hamstrung by awful dialogue and plotting, too many companions and direction that seemingly tells her she has to impersonate either Tennant or Smith instead of having her own interpretation of the character- because the writers don't have a coherent version for her or the directors to stick to.

You miss out it was also made by a female producer and a gay asian man.

Yeah, despite enjoying Classic Doctor Who, this release has zero interest for me. Now, if GoG could get the rights to Destiny of the Doctors, that would be another question!

How about Angela Lansbury? Though at a peachy old age of 95, I can't imagine she'd be much spry at this point, but I could imagine her as the Doctor; due to her role in...just about anything. (Particularly Murder She Wrote.)
And the BBC has written far less subtle episodes before, like The Happiness Patrol; a whole serial dedicated to Thatcherism.
Several, actually. Both in the old series and new series. Oh, and maybe don't keep up your hopes for a good origin story, unless you like OCs being stuffed into the saga.

Oh dear, another nail in Doctor Who's coffin.

I have absolutely no problem with him being gay. I do have a problem with him looking like moron. I mean, he looks like a dead ringer for Simple Jack. Worse than that is being almost certain he's been cast not for his acting talent or fitting the role but for his sexual orientation. Also, for his orientation to have any bearing on the show he'd have to also play the Doctor as gay... and for that we'd have to have a romantic partner for him, and regardless of the Doctor's orientation I never liked the Doctor being romantically involved with anyone. As much as I liked the show until recently, I don't think it ever had a good romantic plot in all its history.

But hey, maybe the new guy will surprise us, and even will demand better scripts because he's actually a damn smart cookie? I mean, I'm already not watching the show anymore, I have nothing to lose here anymore. It can't get worse than that. I can't negative watch it.

The Doctor was always, is, and will be an asexual middle-aged white man. Forcing the character to fit in with modern social values, making the character a spokesperson for whatever political correctness is in vogue, is one of the worse decisions the BBC ever made. I blame R.T. Davis and C. Chibnall.
