Ancestors Legacy is now available DRM-free. Get it 50% off until March 22nd, 2pm UTC.

Ancestors Legacy is a squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history, it brings to life four different nations and their conflicts, usually solved by war.

Mafwek: Dude, please - can we stop with this all it's not real X genre already?

As I understand, it is medieval CoH, which means that it should have some kind of economy, hence it should be some kind of RTS.
avatar
Matruchus: Its not even close to CoH. Only people who never played CoH and saw some videos on Youtube compared this to CoH. The game is several times more barebones. You are extremely limited with everything you do besides big emphasis on tactical battles which it definitely has. Everything else is just not there. If you love tactical battles then the game is for you. Economy in this game is just an afterthought. If it wouldn't be there it wouldn't really matter, that's how little it matter. Thats my experience from the beta. Hence why its more RTT then RTS and for a lot of people that distinction actually matters. Especially for older people who played RTS games in their golden era.

Eitherway I haven't mentioned that its a RTT to start another pointless discussion, just for people who actually wan't to play a real RTS game so that they don't get burned by buying this.

Also a CoH like game is coming to gog and that's Iron Harvest.
I played CoH. And that game was barebones as well, although I will agree this one is even more so. But economy in that game was an afterthought to tactical battles as well, so I fail to see the point.

Well there is a problem in your wish - "real" RTS doesn't exist, definition of RTS depends on perspective, and I don't trust perspective of other people.

TheGreatDustpan: I'd recommend people report the 1 star review since it offers 0 critique of the game itself, which goes against the review guidelines on GOG.
avatar
Zoidberg: Thi is a broken guideline. The only reason is that GOG are cowards and don't want to dip in it, so they're juste ready to obfuscate the information rather than accept criticism (as long as it's put with respect to all parties that is).

Your reaction is reason why there are so bad or missing information, gaming related or otherwise.
They admit to not having played the game. It's not a comment section on YouTube. The idea is that you're supposed to actually review the game.

They didn't play the game before the devs took 10 months to deliver on their promise for a gog release.

And yes they recently commincated on that, but that is still their fault and that is still their bad handling of their communication.

And it is a sensible thing to deliver that information too.

I totally reject the argument that "if it's not directly related to the game, it shouldn't be in a review".

Yes, it should. If a multinational makes their product by testing on animals, this HAS to be open information so that people unwilling to pay for animal testing are clearly informed about that.
That is just one example, but I hope it'll convey the message across to you.

I have nothing more to add I think.

Does anyone know if the game has a pause feature?
avatar
ConsulCaesar: I was moderately hyped about this, as I love the time period and setting and it's been too long since I picked a new RTS, but the massive delay for the DRM-free release made me lose interest. I will reconsider now that the team did deliver and release the game on GOG.

Is single-player scenario/campaign only or does it include some kind of skirmish/random map mode? The store page and their own website only cite "battles" for multiplayer mode, and single-player campaigns.

Edit: according to the wiki, there is skirmish mode for both single and multiplayer, but it's apparently pre-made maps.
Thanks for the info, the first doubt i had was about a sandbox or skirmish mode. A shame that there is only 3 maps for skirmish, i hope they will add more in the future.

Yes, the game has tactical pause. If you press P the game pauses and you can give orders to your units. Hope that helps.

Thank you, Matruchus.

greyhat: Also, the devs of this game made a good post discussing the reasons and they all sound reasonable to me.

Thanks for posting this, I'd missed it.
I was hoping for word here about these things but honestly didn't expect it.
I'll be adding this link to my post earlier in the thread, it's certainly a good read, and IMO enough reason to change perspectives on how much trust I'm willing to give this studio right now.
Until I read that dev post, I didn't know that devs sometimes sub-contract out their GOG ports. That's disturbing IMO.

How often does that happen? How many GOG games has that been done to? Why has no one ever disclosed that this goes on before?
A year later and buggy but I appreciate your help getting there... Grabbed my copy, thanks gog!

Mr.Mumbles: It still boggles my mind that the creators of "for controversy's sake" Hatred and silly Beachhead clone IS Defense ended up making a perfectly acceptable game for their third title.
It was always this way: never listen to media or screwheads how they interpret people reasoning but only judge actions solely, not people or opinions about them, because in modern times everyone can plant a sticker with agenda to someone where is none. Raw emotion or experience has no 'idea' or 'shock value' since it's older than humanity, ethics and culture.
They will get a chance, bought...

IIRC, it was their publisher that sub-contracted the "port". When that finally fell apart the devs actually got it done in a reasonable amount of time. Assuming my understanding of the timeline is accurate.

Well, you know even ID Software had contractor to do Super Nintendo port back in 1993 (it´s whole different story that it also didn´t work out and they had to do it themselves), so having others to do ports of your games seems to be nothing new in the industry.

Why? There ought to be at least some people today, who can learn from the past.
