AtomicP: As long as your CPU isn't too ancient, the most significant upgrade for me was going from a 5+ year old Radeon 5750 to a GeForce GTX 750Ti. Pretty cheap and made a massive difference. For example, I was lucky to get 15 fps at 720p in W3, but now I can happily play at 1080p where everything is smooth.

I run with an AMD Phenom II 955BE, which is pretty outdated as far as the current state of the art goes.

IAmSinistar: That's good advice, and something I've done with systems before. I would need to check if my CPU is worth tacking a new card onto. Probably need to replacing the power supply with a beefier one as well, I've had to do that before too.
I second the suggestion of keeping the CPU and upgrading GPU. What CPU do you have? I'm running the game pretty well with a dirt-cheap AMD quadcore. With new graphics-chips releasing next month, current-generation GPUs will drop in price as well.

It's an AMD A8-3820 APU. Seems decent enough for my graphical applications (Corel, POV-Ray, etc). And I can play titles like the original Witcher and some newer games like MIND: Path to Thalamus just fine. So maybe a new graphics card would do the job?

I think that's probably the way to go. Just make sure you get a deal. I'm still using an Intel Core i7 920 from five(maybe 6?)* years ago and it seems to do fine. I've only got a GTX 560 Ti in my rig. I've played about an hour of Witcher 3 and it seems to be okay, although there are definite FPS drops. So, yeah, look for a good deal on a new graphics card for the nonce, I'd say.

*edit* Actaully, that may be even 7 years old now...

Zoidberg: Here comes the obnoxious advert in my optional client. :P

Base game was nice (a little rough around some edges but pretty cool) but not sure I want to return to it (especially since I lost my saves, when will cloud save be implemented ? :P).
The patches have fixed a TON of stuff, including balance, menu reworking, lots of free new features etc.
You know that this game has repeatedly been called game of the year, maybe even the best RPG of all time?

I think that will do :) I have a A8-5600K myself. You don't need the highest-end GPU to run it either. I have a Radeon HD 7850 1GB (also dirt-cheap), and I play with all settings on high, 1680x1050 resolution, and a solid 30 fps. Depending on what settings you want to play on, you might want to get something higher-end, but now you know that even a 4 year old budget-card gets the job done :)

Ironically, one of the few places where it is not "game of the year" is GOG. Of all the GOG games released in 2015, the game with the highest average rating is Kerbal Space Program (4.9), not The Witcher 3 (4.8).

Consider that Kerbal space program has 515 votes opposed to 8178 votes of The WItcher 3. :)

There are more games with 4.9 (which is an internal number) rating. For example:
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Hearts of stone
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Expansion pass
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Game + Expansion pass
;)

Thank you both! I does indeed sound like a graphics card update should be enough. And not even a bank-breaking one with enough fans to achieve flight. :)

You mean the votes for the Linux version? It's now at 8235.

Hehe. Mine does indeed sound like a jet engine during the toughest gaming-sessions. Especially now during the summer, it's like having a Boeing 747 on my desk :P

Ha! So it's not just marketing hyperbole when the manufacturers claim that their graphics cards will blow you away. ;D

I don't trust medias and fans to decide of that. I'm not much keen of hype.

It is a good game, pretty good in some parts, but pretty cumbersome in some others.

And because I bought and played the game earlier, my opinion suddenly doesn't matter because of patches? If the game is so much better with patches, maybe it was released too soon.

Peace.
So excited for this. The Witcher 3 was defiantly my GOTY 2015. Absolutely loved it.
