That bad? I occasionally skim it and it seems to get updates. Have not read anything about the customization progress that why I thought asking (and maybe having a dev talk a bit about the last few years of Planet Nomads development in general) could not hurt.

Not really, but the latest patch was released in February, so the development has been ongoing at least until then.

I just hope that we could get some gradual control to acceleration and steering with analog game controllers or at least be able to control the power level of the wheels in for example 10% steps with a mousewheel before the developers move on to other projects entirely.

One day my computer may be able to run this game with a great framerate no matter how complex vehicles I design, but with the current on/off speed control there is no point in trying to build large and yet fast ground vehicles as difficult terrain would certainly cause the physics engine to launch them into the space.
