Ghorpm: I've just got an email from my friend with some more news. He warns me though that it's not a solid data but more like his own speculations based on incomplete information he was able to acquire... long story short it seems that some Linux games were optimized externally by Steam employees. And the decision makers are afraid that putting a Linux build on GOG may result in a lawsuit. My friend knows that it doesn't make much sense but he is afraid that his boss attitude may be "better safe than sorry". Sadly, he says he sees a lot of weird things like that in this company...

adamhm: I doubt that's really an issue as Valve haven't used such restrictive licensing before AFAIK - the last I heard they didn't even impose such restrictions on using the Source engine, but I can believe that some people responsible for arranging releases might be unsure about it & haven't bothered to actually look into it.

I know for certain that it isn't the case with these games at least:

Metro Redux series - these not being here is partly GOG's decision due to issues they encountered (not sure what kind of issues though, as the Steam versions run great for me).

Saints Row series - these were ported by VP; when VP were asked about bringing them here their response was that they hadn't been asked to prepare any builds for GOG by Deep Silver. Given its current state on Steam I expect SR2 would get rejected (it's *still* missing a lot of audio and has some performance/graphics issues even taking into account the original poor quality of the Windows release - it actually runs better in Wine) but SR3 is mostly stable and its performance while not great is reasonable, especially when compared to Wine.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - a build was prepared & submitted to GOG a little over 4 months ago. It's been waiting on some "red tape" to be cleared ever since then; no idea what's currently holding it up.
Yeah, that's more or less it - Valve doesn't make any problems but they are unsure about it so they don't want to bother :/ It shows their attitude towards GOG and gamers in general. As I said before - my friend will try to bring the subject as much as he can but no promises.

You've put an incredible effort into getting more Linux releases here, adamhm! That's really awesome.
I'm a long time Linux user myself and I play games pretty much exclusively on Linux.

I'd like to be in for Transistor if that's okay.

Ok, I know you are a troll, but seriously? Why would anyone claim to be a Linux user if he actually was using something else? That doesn't make any sense. It is not like I would gain something from pretending to be using an operating system I'm not actually using. It could possibly mean that I'm not eligible for the giveaway because it is meant for new Linux users. If that's the case, that's be perfectly fine, but I am pretty sure that's not your call to make.

I always thought the point of giveaways was for people to take part in them.

Anyway, I'll stick with Linux.

adamhm: Anyway if it's an issue that GOG can't fix themselves then it isn't going to make any difference however many times we ask them and we're better off focusing on Deep Silver and/or 4A Games instead, as they definitely have the means to actually do something about it.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Deep-Silver-Refuses-to-Provide-Linux-DRM-free-Builds-to-GOG-com-for-Metro-Last-Light-Redux-481335.shtml
Update: We have been contacted by Tomek Nalewajk from GOG.com who made a statement in order to shed some light:

"Our customer support representative's statement that 'unfortunately we weren't able to acquire the DRM-free builds for Linux' was admittedly vague and seems to have led to a misunderstanding. According to your article, the reason we haven't released a Linux version of Metro: Last Light is that Deep Silver have not delivered the appropriate builds - in this case that responsibility was on us. "

"We encountered a number of technical issues while preparing our DRM-free Linux and Mac OS X versions and made the call to hold back the releases until we can be confident in the quality of our product. While we are trying to fix the problems, we cannot make any promises if and when the DRM-free versions will be ready. "
E.G. GOG is taking on some of the responsibilities of a publisher with these builds. As for why one might contact them I would direct you to the OP. ;) Whether they considered this a big deal or not when it came out I'm quite sure GOG hasn't had an employee on this 24-7 since the release. If nothing else it might encourage them to bother their own contacts.
Anyway, this would be in addition to asking Deep Silver/4A Games not instead.

I already contacted support back when the first of the games was released here, and Firek replied to the post I made with the reply I got from support: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_metro_last_light_redux_cc473/post93

The issue is that the builds they were provided by Deep Silver had technical issues, and evidently serious enough issues to withhold their release.

GOG always try to fix or work around any problems themselves, but it's clear that in this case whatever problems they encountered are far from trivial - and based on the amount of time that has passed (coming up to two years now...) and the complete lack of updates since then, it would seem beyond GOG's ability to fix.

I'm also doubtful it'll help because whenever I've contacted support about the missing Linux builds of games here before, it seems I've almost always received the same copy+paste reply:

We continue to expand our Linux catalog and we do our best to add Linux-supported games to our offer as often as possible.
Many of our premiere indie titles offer native Linux versions already and we're constantly working on adding Linux compatibility to our back-catalog games as well. It's hard to tell when--or if--a specific game will undergo that treatment, as it requires not only technical work, but also licensing agreements. We hope, however, that you'll find our existing Linux catalog already quite impressive.

Thanks and congrats the other winners!
Thanks for the game, @adamhm!
And thank you for promoting Linux. I had long years without games and I was really surprised when I realized last year that it is possible to play most of games on my Linux. Thanks to people like you for moving the world in the right direction ;)

Congratulations to all the winners!
This giveaway, along with your past giveaways, are indescribably different from all other giveaways. You mobilized us to put pressure on the publishers and GOG about missing Linux builds.

Thank you for your generosity and for raising awareness of the establishment of Linux.
Thank you very much!
And I do hope Linux gets more recognition and support from the publishers. It's been a good year since I switched to mostly Linux (I still use one Windows machine for work), and I can't say I miss Windows at all...
