Vythonaut: As for the difficulty, i found it to be just right (at normal) with the exception of certain difficulty spikes here or there, where i had to reload many times. The game has that autohealing system like CoD, but you can die pretty easily if you try to play hero; it pays to be vigilant and patient. If there was a quicksave function, it would have been much easier to progress in certain missions. Earned in Blood (the second game) was the most difficult one, while Highway in Hell (the third game) was the easiest of the bunch. Overall, i had lots of fun playing all of them.
Thanks for the explanation! Reloading many times doesn't sound convincing to me, I'm too impatient for that. Maybe I still try out the first game.

ciemnogrodzianin: I've finished the first one so far. It's probably harder than most of today's shooters, but there is still easy mode available and if you understand that you should use tactics instead of just running forward, the game is perfectly fine in terms of difficulty even for casual gamers (I'm one of them).
I was about to ask Vythonaut if there are only harder modes or also easier ones beside normal. Easy mode sounds good to me. :) Thanks!

ciemnogrodzianin: I'm not sure if I'll be able to install second part this weekend, but I'll try and let you know how it works under Wine.
With the lower price of the first 2 games (for my region) I'm going to risk the 2nd game as it's released only a few months after the first one and probably uses the same engine. The question is the 3rd game, as it's more expensive and released 3 years after the other games. So it probably uses a different or heavily modified engine which might not work in Wine.

Edit: Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood also works in Wine, without any tweaks. I haven't played it a lot yet, just have watched the intro videos and started to play the first mission. Graphics is a bit dated, but from the first impression it looks like a good game. Although I'm still alive I'm already overwhelmed by the number of keys to remember. :P

So thanks for your recommendations!

Alexim: I was wondering if there is still the user who shared the links to the different versions of the background of the sales, or if alternatively there is someone who knows how to find them.
avatar
Vythonaut: He's still here but he has been somewhat lazy recently... :P
I knew that in the past years it was you, luckily goglin has replaced you very well for the last sales :P

Confirmed. BiA:EiB works well under Wine, no tweaks needed.
But it seems to be harder than previous one, as I can see. Perhaps it's only a first mission, but it looks like flanking is not so easy as before. It won't be easy to survive.

Regarding controls - they're quite intuitive. I rarely used "V" to check enemy position, to be honest. But controling your team is a key to success for sure. For me moving them to relatively safe place and asking for covering fire was enough to make the most part of our job (i.e. flanking and killing Germans) on my own.

tfishell: Is Arhn an e-celeb GOG teamed up with or something?
Sorry, no idea who's Arhn. I know only Dungeon Keeper :D

You're welcome! You do that, just play it on easy. If you enjoy it, you'll definitely enjoy the second game as well. ;)

True, he/she does a great job. :)

I guess these games are not for me. I've started with the second game. I like the tactical game play, but it's ruined by the map design. How you are supposed to play tactically when every way but the frontal one is artificially blocked by walls, fences or barricades? You cannot open or destroy doors to pass through houses, you can't even jump or climb over walls or fences. After searching half an hour for a gap in the walls to flank the opponents I gave up bored.

Yes, the first game seems to be a bit easier. At least in the first few missions maps are more open and not as artificially restricted. Until that mission where you have to guide the tank through a straight road with roads to the left and right being blocked...

DeMignon: That's strange, because I do own Sorcerer King, but there is no discount shown for Rivals here o_O?
avatar
zlep: Try putting it in your cart - the discount should automagically appear.
You're right! :-)

Oh, no. Don't tell me that the whole second game is like that! That closed ways every corner made me furious during the first longer mission. I assumed that it's only this one chapter or sth... If it works like that through the whole story, I doubt I'd like to play any further... :(

Sorry to hear that, maybe you could put a guide/walkthrough to good use if you'd like to give it a second chance.
Why Army Men II isn't on sale ?

Thanks for your kind words. But no one will replace the one and only Vythonaut :)

I'll usually post image links only if requested :)

Well, you better make it a habit from now on, because i hereby name you the official GOG Sales Banner & Background Extractor (GOGSBBE). XD

Don't worry, I haven't gotten any further. After failing to find a gap in the walls I've tried to attack the enemy frontally, died, gave up and switched to the first game. So I don't know if the maps in later missions get any better.

Actually I've enjoyed playing the first few missions of the first game. It just annoyed me to be that artificially limited by the map design in that tank guiding mission. And I'm too impatient to play the same mission more than 2 or 3 times. Sooner or later I'll give the game a second chance. Hopefully the next missions will again give me more room for tactical game-play. But instead of using a walk-through I'll rather try to find a cheat code to skip that mission. :P
My motivation to buy the 3rd game is gone for now though. As you've told me it's easier than the first two games I hope that it has a better mission design with less artificial map restrictions. So when I've gotten the confirmation that it runs on Wine I still might grab it on another sale.

2 or 3 times? I must have reloaded a dozen times at some point in Earned in Blood. :P
