tfishell: It's been over a year since I made this thread. With the big, special, whatever, $100 edition that Gearbox is letting people preorder, I figured this would be worth a bump even though the last post wasn't actually that long ago, March 2014.

It may well make absolutely no difference, but the thing is it can only take a minute of your time (if you have a Facebook or Twitter account) to at least try.
whoops i posted that in another thread...
I am all about some homeworld HD redux, but for $100...not so sure. Maybe after they reap their profits on that set, they will sell the original games on GOG.

As the release gets nearer, a GOG/DRM-free discussion for the remastered version ignited in the gearbox forum.
GOG version? or at least a DRM free version

The point of the thread pretty much centres around DRM. I fell asleep after reading first two pages. Very little about Homeworld = should be on GOG.
I think some of the Steam douchebags are a bit incorrect.. most of us dont give a **** about the lobby MP bullshit. Its originally a singleplayer game.. so steamworks should NOT be needed or integral - would most people they agree they couldnt care if the original games came with working MP or not?

More about a discussion of what their definition of DRM is and why they love steam. I don't care about why they love steam or why they think it's a positive. No official response it seems, don't think it's going anywhere. Stupid gearbox.
Yeah, like any other thread on the topic it degenerates in a "DRM-free guy vs lynching Steam apologists horde".
Steam is love, Steam is life, nothing could ever be wrong with a monoploy etc., the same usual crap. I didn't even bother to go after the first page: this kind of discussion is completely useless and gets on my nerves quickly. Homeworld will be tied to Steam like almost everything else, and it wold be so even if it was a strictly single-player game.

By the way, each time I stumble in a thread like this I always wonder why the EU still has not attacked Valve. It is in blatant violation of every anti-monopoly law (hence against one of the fundamental principles of the Union), yet unlike almost all the other big companies they have never been touched.
Even if Gearbox cannot (or don't want to) remove Steam components from their HD version - they can still make few extra $ by selling original versions here.

Wouldn't that reduce the sales for the new HD version?
I'm pretty sure that many players -me included- would rather choose the original over the remastered, and Gearbox certainly cannot charge the same price for the two... yet, gamers are known to be impatient, so many of those who would buy the original here will probably just take the first available version they'll find -in this case the DRM'd, more expensive one.

No Yes soundtrack, no Cataclysm, Steam...And Gearbox are well known for their love of Steam DRM.

Well, I don't see it that negative...some voiced there already support of a non-DRM / "alternative-to-steam" position ... so we should enstrengthen this position by taking part in this discussion and increasing visibility of this position!

So, please contribute!

I like how the poster there had clearly read Steam ToS, but not gOg's :)

I'm not so sure about it...It really depens on how much they would charge for classic versions alone. But coming here with oldies after couple of months & 1-2 Steam sales & price drop (which is inevitable) seems like a good idea to me.

Well - it's their money in my pocket.

No matter how much we want it here, they will do what is the best for them. They will first release it on steam so most people will buy it there, and then release it drm-free for whoever still doesn't have it on steam (and some people that will buy it again for the drm-free feature). Oh, and before the drm-free release there will be a discount sale on steam for those that can't pay full prize.....
The sad fact is that most people jump to buy it at full price the first time it is released (and with all the disadvantages of steam)
Sadly, Homeworld Remastered still not on GOG and still in broken state.... but, currently for 12$ at humble bumble (Steam key only) for those who want to take a look.
