seleapi: My gaming computer still runs with windows XP.
Asking just for curiosity and because, unfortunately, all the new games do not support XP anymore.
Anyway at the moment i do not want to reinstall the OS and no want to throw other money at Microsoft.

Please don't tell me to install linux because most of my games don't works with it.
I run both on the same hardware.
Linux Mint for everything (including most games) and WinXP for some Windows only games that don't have a good WINE configuration easily available yet. I'm not a tinkerer when it comes to software.

Not throwing money at Microsoft is a good decision.

JudasIscariot: If you're only installing a new CPU then you won't need to reinstall your operating systems. If I could swap a CPU in the mid-90s without reinstalling Windows back then, then I am sure the same holds true today :)

sunshinecorp: Actually, that's not always true. It can cause a kernel panic blue screen sometimes.
Perhaps although I thought Windows had the basic driver support for most CPUs and the only thing needed is an installation of the manufacturer's drivers that come with a new processor. Then again, it's Windows so it's almost like rolling the dice :D

Tarm: What the fuck can't cause a kernel failure?
I've found out that you can avoid 100% of BSODs by not installing Windows in the first place.
I know about the Linux, it won't give me any troubles + it's faster on my legacy hardware.
As per the hot swap, I'm not so sure it will work, opinions on the net are 50-50, because I'm going from 1 core to double core CPU, which uncle Win will see as from 1 CPU to whole 2 new and I don't know if I'll be able to reinstall some drivers only or the whole OS will be baked.

It indeed comes down to driver issues, and not being able to switch between them automatically during the boot process. USUALLY running Windows repair can replace the driver with the appropriate one for the new configuration, but again, not always...

Well, a hot swap is not what I had in mind as, technically, that refers to a part being swapped while the machine is still running :)

And that would be a very hot swap, since the CPU is probably the hottest part in the entire machine (barring some monster GPUs, I guess).
Sorry :D didn't think it through, but at least happened to be funny :)
2 of our pc's run on XP the older one on Windows Vista, that's it, and I'm happy with that. There are only a few games that won't run on my XP but instead on Vista, I recognized this with Beyond Divinity, Seal of Evil and Pool of Radiance.

Well my grandpa has Windows 10 installed on his PC, all I can say, if that was the first OS I learned of, I would have never become the PC junkie I am today, probably I would have never used one at all.

True. I wish there had been a choice until XP came long. Kernel was the cause for many a headache before XP. Oh how I hated that thing!
I've got one XP PC, but its too weak it just crumbles every time I run it. I'd normally put Windows 10 on it but seeing as it even struggles with just XP.... yeah.

pimpmonkey2382.313: I don't know what answer he's expecting, doesn't want to throw more money to MS, but what else is there, except for linux?
I'm expecting no answer, just asked to know how many people are still using XP.
Curiosity :)
Upgraded to Linux long ago.

Nuff said.
Currently dual booting Win XP and lubuntu to get a little extra juice out of the computer (well, not really). But hoping to have decided and purchased something new by the end of the month.
