Time4Tea: Cyberpunk 2077 has cosmetic content built in to the game that acts as a reward for players who are using Galaxy. My understanding is this is not a seperate downloadable DLC, but single-player content that is part of the base game, which is only accessible after the player has completed online verification via Galaxy (it is not available to non-Galaxy users). Therefore, it is by definition DRM. Some people are trying to excuse it, because it is supposedly minor cosmetic content; however, it sets a terrible precedent and is still a violation of GOG's '100% DRM-free' promise. 99.9% is not 100%.

Then GOG (and any other business that is based in a country that values democracy and freedom of speech should not be doing business in China, if it involves submitting to censorship and other ethically questionable behavior. And Western consumers should reject and boycott those companies that do. Why are you living there anyway, if they are such an oppressive regime?

laser_eyes: Ok, Mr Purity, turn your computer off now and never turn it on again. Of course that means that you can never play a PC game again, but that's your standard. Microsoft does a lot of business in China and llike every company that does business here they obey the orders of the government. So follow your standard. Turn off your computer and never turn it on again. You want to boycott companies that do business in China. Then you can't use Windows. No more PC games for you.
But my computer/phone manufacturers and Microsoft didn't ignored what customers want to pleased the Chinese...what GOG is doing now makes me feel like the players that want the game are not important to GOG and they didn't even respond just shows they really don't care.

I still don't know why GOG decided to pull the game so close to its planned release on the store.
It seems more like self-censorship that major outside pressure. Just like the mandatory underwear for my Cyberpunk character, it's a business decision meant to generate a larger userbase.

You see, we are all equally worthless to CDP, CDPR and GOG. We exist only as possible sources of revenues that need to be maxed out. There is nothing to be gained from fighting amongst ourselves but if we stand together, we might not get scammed into buying unfinished products again.

As for the game, itself... I don't dislike RedCandleGames. I got their previous game "Detention" on Steam. They offered an apology and made changes to the game to avoid offending anyone in the future. They should get a chance to release the game again at some point. I don't dislike the CCP and Xi Jinping, either. It is up to the Chinese people to decide what kind of leadership they want and what they feel offended by. But I will say that I believe mainland China and Taiwan are stronger together and still share much common ground in terms of history and culture.

I also believe that GOG would be stronger by listening to its userbase and living up to its own standards.
If you don't want to list a game because you fear past controversy could spark future controversy then don't decide to pull back just before you had announced a release. GOG needs to decide what its identity is supposed to be. Are you here for people who want preservation of good ol' games? Are you here to give everyone a DRM free option without compromise? Or do you just want to grow a bigger userbase and more profits by any means necessary to become the poor man's steam of people scammed into the Cyberpunk Beta? A place of sometimes. Sometimes DRM. Sometimes old games. Sometimes new games. Sometimes pulling a game to possibly have more leverage with another batch of future users?

AmethystViper: Get off your high horse, dipshit.
Read the original post:

"We should never, ever bow to censorship or blackmail from a totalitarian dictatorship. Screw censorship. Screw the CCP. Screw Xinnie the Pooh. And, of course, screw DRM and any game that contains DRM (including Cyberpunk)."

I'm not the one on a high horse.

By the way, I guess the fact that you didn't even attempt to counter my argument means I must have a point.

949801422: So, I am a Chinese player, and I can understand your anger, but in fact, foreigners cannot understand. This is a serious problem in China, which cannot be offended and is a political correctness. Just like racism and homosexuality in the United States. If the dedication is listed on GOG, then Chinese users cannot access GOG (just possible) just like steam.
GOG has many users in China, but they don't like communication. Here, CDPR has a large number of advertisements in China, and even middle school students have purchased Cyberpunk 2077.
I just used GOG,
I buy games on GOG almost every day. I don’t want GOG to be shut down. Because of steam and GOG, piracy is decreasing significantly. Among the players I know, more and more people have PS4, SWITCH, XBOX
and...If you want to play dedication, you can go to the PlayStation store
Nobody is forcing you to buy or play the game...Just don't buy it if you don't like it. Imagine if I had the restaurants remove your favorite dish from the menu because I'm allergic to it. it's just not right, also the "offensive" content in the game had already been removed 2 years ago...what exactly offend you guys now?

It's impressive how international the GOG userbase is. All the more surprising that GOG didn't give this planned release more of a thought. I agree with you, friend. Red Candle Games should get a chance to release the game again. The offensive content was removed. Besides, one indie game doesn't change anything about the bigger picture.
The entire EU acknowledges the One-China policy and there is no change to that on the horizon. Not much harm is done if a Polish company adds a game to its store that was made by people who probably don't like Xi Jinping very much.

I always thought Poles were tough and fought against oppression. I recall when Lech Walesa cofounded the solidarity movement to protest against communism and the Soviet Union. Poles were the first to reject communism then.
What is wrong with the younger generation of Poles operating GoG?
You are a disgrace for cowering to communist China!
More than 6875 customers want Devotion released.
You are not serving your customers interests if you don't release Devotion..

949801422: Chinese players are indeed extremely offended by this game. But as far as I know, the government may ask them to remove the game, but it has not asked them to remove the game worldwide. This is a unilateral action taken by Steam and GOG in order to ensure their interests.
I think so, too. This looks like preemptive obedience by GOG. It looks like they didn't know what the game was when they cleared it for launch in the store, later discovered the controversy and did the last minute pull to display preemptive obedience to everyone in mainland China who remembers the controversy. It's true that Xi Jinping doesn't get much love outside of mainland China but insults are not constructive criticism. I'd say Chinese players have a right to be offended. Especially if they and their families have personally benefitted from Xi Jinping's policy of ending poverty for millions of people. On the other hand, the offensive content was removed from the game. Are there no second chances in Chinese culture?

949801422: Some foreigners may have misunderstandings about China. In China, the Taiwan issue is very acute. The vast majority of people support the Communist Party, because the Communist Party has made progress in China in the past 20 years, many people have better livesm.
The Chinese are not nationalists. The World War made the Chinese oppose fascism. At first, the Chinese did not dislike Taiwan, but the Taiwanese always used their nationality to insult and laugh at mainlanders. Make the Chinese extremely disgusted with Taiwan
The real situation: Dedication is very popular in China. At first, many Chinese players called it the pride of Chinese games and bought this game, but after discovering offensive content, everyone felt deceived and insulted.
You being offended by an Earlier version of the game because it made fun of your leader is already weird for Western standards (making fun of politicians is a healthy thing in true democracies, you know, places where there isn't a dictator for life that can't be mocked), but ok, we could understand a ban of the game in your country (it would still be weird, I mean, if you don't like a game just vote with your wallet, leave your 1 star rating and comment and let others decide for themselves what to do).

Now, the moment Chinese inner politics starts affecting everyone else rights to purchase a product we have a problem and you no longer have my sympathies regardless of me trying to understand your cultural background. In other words, this actually hurts the Chinese image outside. You're not even a US-like superpower with troops in every continent and you're already dictating what I can and can't buy - this is not good and we will resist it.

I understand your position. A lot of progress was achieved under the CCP's leadership. This is true.
And no insult will change the facts. Why can't you forgive RedCandleGames after their apology?
What would you need to move on and forgive them? When everyone gets along, mainland and Taiwan, there will be one China.

Maybe he's using Linux?
You can play games without Microsoft's involvement.

Some foreigners may have misunderstandings about China. In China, the Taiwan issue is very acute. The vast majority of people support the Communist Party, because the Communist Party has made progress in China in the past 20 years, many people have better livesm.
Most people nowadays, especially young ones be like "MY WAY OR NO WAY" especially in the West. They don't even realize that different cultures do exist. that Asia is different in many ways from the West. It's not bad or good, it is what it is.

And western way while works in western countries, better in one place, worse in the others, we all know what a failure it was when they tried to install it in the Middle East. Because people there are nothing like westerners.

Also i really like how the notion of democracy changed in some countries from "majority decides, minority obeys but they have right to make more people to take their side when the next time to vote comes" to "a vocal part of a small minority dictates everyone how to live and think". It will take some time to realize that their way can be better... for them, but not for the others.

The Chinese are not nationalists. The World War made the Chinese oppose fascism.
From my experience a lot of people nowadays knows just a few things about WW2, they don't know that China lost 20+ millions in that war, mostly civilians. That Japan was the same as nazi Germany, just worse because Germans were doing for about 6 years, Japan was doing it to China and Korea (mostly but not only) for many years.
I've even heard some people having the audacity of saying that Axis countries had greater losses than Allied. Sure. 4% is greater than 60... And that's not counting military losses. If we'll count those it will be more than double numbers of losses for Allies vs Axis.

The real situation: Dedication is very popular in China. At first, many Chinese players called it the pride of Chinese games and bought this game, but after discovering offensive content, everyone felt deceived and insulted.
If "protected categories" in the West can demand change or removal of something when theres something *some* of them finds offensive, i guess people from China have the same right. Especially when something is *really* offensive and just tasteless.
