== BUG REPORTING ==

Please use: http://mantis.gog.com and include
1. steps to reproduce the bug (if possible)
2. screenshot or movie showing the bug (if possible)
3. Galaxy Client logs (see below)

Where can I find Galaxy logs on my computer?
On Windows 7 or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Mac OS X: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

== FEATURE SUGGESTIONS ==

Please use: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy. For feature suggestions and votes on them please try do explain how Galaxy and its users will really benefit from it.

== IMPORT ALREADY INSTALLED GAMES TO GALAXY ==

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the Galaxy logo button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library (click on the image of the game), then click the More button and select "Manage Installation" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

== KNOWN ISSUES ==
- throttling max download speed is not yet possible
- notifications related to incoming chat messages and friend requests does not always disappear instantly when consumed and may require reloading Store page
- games imported from existing installations will auto-update once, even if updating is disabled
- Moving Galaxy from /Applications on Mac OS X will stop the app from working
- Galaxy cannot be launched by other users on the same computer

For everyone who has a problem with missing api-ms-crt dlls in Client's versions post 1.1.5:
Please install one of those windows update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3118401
You may need to update Windows to meet the requirements for these:
For Windows 8.1 and for Windows Server 2012: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2919355
For Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976932

You can also try reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables 2015 (x86) if you meet above requirements.
Available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

If above instructions doesn't work for you, create a separate issue on mantis.gog.com and we'll try to help you individually.

Please note that this solution only helps with the missing api-ms-crt dlls.

Answering this question: Why 1.1 doesn't work after updating to 1.2?

This is happening probably due to incompatible database from version 1.2, please delete this folder:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\GOG.com\Galaxy\storage
usually
C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\storage\

Then you'll have to use scan&import (menu under the top Galaxy logo) function to see your games back in Galaxy Client.

A big shoutout to GOG for this client!
avatar
MetalPlateMage: Of note the Play button is available either way, I don't remember that being available a year ago.
avatar
JMich: It was. It was available since before the Elder Scroll games were released here. I should be able to dig up a picture if you wish.
Whoops, no need - I wrote that too literally and meant it as a positive note, as in "it's nice that detected games the client thinks are 'unowned' are still playable (possibly offline only?) through the client".
I have 2 monitors and prefer to have the Galaxy window on my second monitor.
However, every time I launch GOG Galaxy it reverts back to the primary monitor.
Can you guys make it so that it remembers its position please?
So there was a recent thread on Reddit about GOG as a store front, and it ended up getting close to 300 replies. While most people expressed how much they like and enjoy GOG, a lot of comments were about GOG (and by extension Galaxy's) lack of features and slow development.

My point is, GOG would do well to take in this feedback and hopefully improve. It's not just us in this thread who are complaining. I really hope 2017 is going to be different than 2016.

Lack of features: Are they talking about features like trading cards and a community market? Because, in my opinion, GOG (and Galaxy) is pretty much feature‐complete, with minor improvements to be brought. For me, the only downside to GOG is if you’re into multi‐player (I’m not)—not many games are cross‐play between platforms. But I think that’s more a problem on the game developers’ side than on GOG’s.

Slow development: Do they really want a quick mess instead of a long but polished product? Are they rushed or something? Besides, Steam also took its time to become what it is, and I’m pretty sure it had (and still has) way more resources than GOG.

Galaxy is far from feature complete, it's missing the most basic of features when compared to other clients and no were not talking about trading cards and community market. Galaxy as of now is nothing more than a very basic game manager and wrapper for GOG.com.

Galaxy has had one major update (v 1.1) since it released from alpha nearly a year and half ago. There is a big difference between a steady influx of improvements, and a quick mess. Some of the features GOG has marked as in progress has been that way for months and months, it does not take that long from a development stand point to integrate some of those requested features and then test them. Some of them are really rather basic. Furthermore we are not even asking GOG to release these features publicly, rather we have asked many times for GOG to make better use of the early preview feature and let us test what they have been working on. So far it's been used rather limited. We suspect the reason feature updates have been slow is because GOG would rather release huge major updates that can be used for PR purposes.

Also comparing this to Steam is un-realistic. Steam released in the early 2000's and at the time Valve was a simple game developer with barely any resources at all compared to today (If I remember correctly they actually approached MS first because they didn't want to undertake it themselves). Times were also way different then and technology has progressed rapidly since then. Development is a lot simpler today then it was back then. They also only stayed in public beta for about a year.

If we consider Steam the ocean and GOG the river... Even companies like itch.io which is the very small stream in this analogy is progressing faster with their own client. Itch.io has nowhere near the resources GOG has but has somehow outpaced them (probably because it's open source). Now I can't vouch for in reliability of the client as it's not a store I really use, but from an outside perspective they appear to be making good progress.

Please tell me which features other clients have, then. (Not meant in a sarcastic way. I really have no idea what substantial else there could be, besides cloud saves that I’ve mentioned a few posts earlier.)

And it’s very likely that the 1.2 update will hit the shores in 2017 (considering that we were told we would see it very soon . . . quite a few weeks ago :P ). So, launch in 2014, 1.1 in 2015, and 1.2 (probably) in 2017—not really that bad of a rate.

GOG wishing to release a major update instead of smaller ones may, indeed, be the reason. Personally, I think that’s a good idea. Sure, some people will leave the ship because of the lack of updates; but others will come on board when a new update is released.

Tyrrhia: Please tell me which features other clients have, then. (Not meant in a sarcastic way. I really have no idea what substantial else there could be, besides cloud saves that I’ve mentioned a few posts earlier.)
Cloud games saves are a big one of course... one only has to look the most requested features to see what is missing. Some others include bandwidth limiter, fps counter, improved offline mode (should be able to launch Galaxy in offline mode), ability to take screenshots from client, estimated time remaining while downloading, ability to change username/display name (not specifically a client issue). Just to name a few, also working check boxes in settings would be nice. GOG has really over used the word "soon" here.

Then there are the community features (which I know not everyone cares for, but every client has them and the vast majority prefer them). This includes things like account profiles, trading cards, etc. Gaining achievement and tracking time is nice and all, but these things are pointless without player profiles... the reason these features became popular was because of the basic human need to compete. Without that it feels really tacked on in Galaxy, an after thought if you will.

This is not a complete listing but just some basic missing features that can be found on most major clients.

Compared to the competition it is. Steam might not get major updates all the time, but they regularly release new features either directly for Steam or their Steam related projects. Hell even the Xbox App on Windows 10 gets a major update every few months.

One major update in a year that quite frankly didn't include anything really ground breaking isn't just slow, it makes one wonder just what GOG is doing with their time. Now granted GOG has expressed they are working hard on the back end, and I was more than willing to cut them some slack in that regard... but for your average joe, that is not going to matter... going more than 4 - 6 months with no feature additions means people lose interest. It's part of offering a service, consumers expect it to constantly improve.

If 1.2 releases in 2017, that is another matter... I expect it will, and it may even be soon. But GOG has been saying 1.2 was coming soon since about 5 or 6 months ago. At the time it was stated only one or two smaller updates before we would see 1.2... we have seen probably 10 or more small updates (largely bug fixes) since. So I won't hold my breath.

Possibly, possibly not. People may just move on to Steam or a number of other sources to get there games on clients are are much more robust than Galaxy. Galaxy is playing catch up, they don't have the luxury in being slow about it.

BKGaming: ~list of features snip~
Oh. There are a lot more features than I expected. Though you can do pretty much all of them with third‐party applications, and they’re not as necessary (but would be nice) as the basic things like downloading and launching.

About the community features: I’m really worried about how that’s be going to be approached. It’s one of the reasons I left Steam, and I don’t want to experience that again. I guess if there is no monetary element involved it, though, then it could be fine. We shall see . . .

avatar
BKGaming: ~about number of updates snip~
You said they were working on back‐end stuff. Let’s hope that, by doing that, they’re laying out the groundwork for future updates so that they will come sooner and be richer of features.

avatar
BKGaming: It's part of offering a service, consumers expect it to constantly improve.
I guess you’re right. I’m really not in the majority, here: I would rather get a stagnant but good product than a perpetually evolving one that may change or even completely destroy one of its features.

Is it GOG’s goal to eventually catch up with Steam, anyway? I mean, I view catching up as becoming the same as what you’re trying up to catch up with. GOG and Steam can cohabit, with distinct missions and distinct features. And, as far as I’m concerned, in this gaming industry, getting the short end of the stick is still getting a really damn long stick. :P
Game time tracking is not working.

Last time i used GOG about 6 months ago, but now, when i wanted to play my new (it's important) Witcher 3 GOTY, i was noticing that time tracking is not working. I played about 1-1.5 hours, but time was still 0 minutes.
Then I've tried: reinstall game, reinstall Galaxy, change game language, change Galaxy language, install another game (BIT.TRIP RUNNER, also new game, never played before) - NOTHING. Play time was still 0 minutes.
I even tried to check W3 non-GOTY edition play time to make sure that W3 GOTY play time didn't counted as non-GOTY play time. Still nothing ever changed.
I don't know if it's GOG servers bug or something else, I even don't know if achievements are working or not. But all i know, time tracking is not working at all, at least at my PC.

Could you please post a mantis issue about that?
(short instructions: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_galaxy_beta_2/post1)
We would like to see details about errors you are having to be able to pinpoint the issue and fix it.

Are you running your W3 through in-Galaxy "PLAY" button?

This.

That's just it - people are used to various modern feature rich gaming clients and many want or even expect that experience. Nothing wrong with wanting that, I want it too however a company doesn't just decide they want to have their own gaming client today, and then have something on par with Steam in 6 or even 12 months. As you mention Valve took years to turn the Steam client and background services into what it is now. I think it's important too to recognize that what people see running on their own computer is only the smallest fraction of all of the code that has to be written - mostly of which lives on servers running on the Internet.

If you compare Galaxy client and its features and services with where Steam client was at roughly the same time in its own development cycle then IMHO Galaxy client is ahead of Steam's development trajectory in comparison despite being in beta and having bugs. The features that are "missing" are features that didn't even exist at all when Steam was as old as Galaxy client is. Such features did not materialize over night for Steam and they wont for Galaxy either.

We are all simply enthusiastically impatient and even demanding at times. I think that is something to be expected from human nature though and that GOG anticipated that as well.

Looking forward to what new releases of Galaxy have to offer us in 2017 however, should be a good year!

I feel like GOG is in the worst position, too—in a vale between two rival, towering mountains: one which belongs to the “No Galaxy!” camp, and the other one which belongs to the “Offer us more features!” camp.

(Not pointing to or judging anyone. I just found that this poetic analogy was pretty funny and sort of accurate. :P )

Nobody is saying otherwise... that's not what it's about. It's about having one major update in over a year and basic features still missing. If it took 10 years to get Galaxy to the same point of Steam that is fine... that doesn't mean we shouldn't be getting a steady influx of new additions, however large or small the additions are or whatever they contain at the very least every few months.

We have only gotten one significant new feature really in the last year, which is the ability to see friends game time and achievement progress. Two if you count the overlay, but that is not even officially released yet. I can't really think of anything else, other than some minor UI improvements.

As I said before, comparing 2004 Steam to GOG today is unrealistic. GOG has way more resources now than Valve had back then when they started Steam. Technology has also progressed rapidly and development is faster/easier in today's world.

A more accurate comparison is comparing Galaxy to Origin/ uPlay / Xbox App/ itch.io client... all of which have progressed faster than Galaxy, and contain more features.

Looking at the itch.io app... it's only been out a year from what I can tell based on a quick Google search, and it appears to be in much better state than Galaxy (which has been out longer) currently is based on some news reports I've read about it. It even has delta patches already. This is a shame compared to Galaxy, as itch.io's resources are nothing compared to GOG's.

https://itch.io/app

I was originally against making Galaxy open source, but If it was, I can pretty much bet we would have a stable client that was significantly farther along right now.

We are demanding yes... but being impatient not really. Over a year without a major update to any software under active development isn't being impatient. I can't think of any software I've used in the past 5-10 years that was under active development that that didn't get at-least two or more major updates in a year's time. Not even major, just some additional features.

Hell even some games have been built at a faster pace than what Galaxy is currently coming along.... this basically says "We bit off more than we can chew and Galaxy is a bigger project than we can actually support". Which is fine, but then communicate that. That's the biggest issue of all GOG's complete lack of actual real communication.
