Good news.

Iron Brigade and Dirt 2 just got bumped to the top of the backlog...

acarlson412: I wonder what they're going to do with Dark Souls. I hope they don't just turn it into an offline-only game, 'cause that would ruin a lot of the fun. I hope game saves will be safe, too, for all the games getting it removed.
It should be moved to Steamworks, seems like From don't have any idea how to do that lol though. They should get another company like the Polish studio which does the PC ports for Capcom to do it.

Paradoks: Technically replacing GFWL with Steam is introducing DRM. GFWL allowed offline profiles. The games discussed here had other forms of protection (usually Securom), but GFWL itself was not DRM.

spoderman: There's 2 types of GFWL. Legacy GFWL usually has around 15 limited activations. I don't know if you can launch all legacy GFWL games with an offline profile without ever entering a CD key, but even if you can, you wouldn't be able to play online multiplayer or have online features.

2nd form of GFWL is SSA, which doesn't have an activation limit but binds the key to your Xbox live account.

GFWL is definitely DRM.. in some cases I would say worse than securom since you can't revoke activations.
I'm not seeing the DRM here. If you can setup an offline profile without a net connection to Microsoft, Live services would be more comparable to GameSpy. End of server support sucks but any multi that can't be done without freely distributable infrastructure software was doomed from the start.

Read my last post.. some games require you to activate your key on GFWL before you can use an offline profile. This would mean when the GFWL server goes down, you can no longer play your game (at least without activating your key prior).

I figured Steamworks would be their intended route, but aren't their non-Steam retail versions of the game as well? I suppose that just entails giving people Steam keys. I'm really just worried about the game saves, really. I really don't want to lose my 100+ hour file because of this, but there was a way to recover them for Arkham City, so maybe I shouldn't worry.

All legacy titles support offline profiles and none require online activation through GFWL. Some of them - like GTA 4 - had third-party DRM solutions such as SecuROM.

As for online play, almost all of them (the legacy titles) have had their online services switched off anyway now. I know Lost Planet, Kane and Lynch and Halo 2's servers have been shut down. Quantum of Solace servers are still up, but I haven't seen anyone on them for a couple of years now.

GFWL is far from perfect, but it is certainly no worse or better than Steam, and had the benefit of at least enabling retail copies to have a fully offline option. All the hate is simply the usual mob mentality you frequently see from PC gamers. You're not one of the "cool kids" unless you spew bile about GFWL.

But yes, the question remains about what happens to those with SSA activation, such as BlazBlue, Ace Combat, Super Street Fighter 4 AE and Dark Souls.

timppu: Ah, the world of DRM... Especially in the context of just replacing one DRM system with another, and then pretending everything is fine again for good.

Kristian: Aren't some of the games DRM free now?
In most cases, GFWL wasn't the DRM. Fallout 3 had no DRM. Most GFWL games had Securom or something like that.

This isn't true, a lot of them work (including Lost Planet). I haven't tested Kane and Lynch 1, but since that game doesn't have online co-op, I probably never would anyway.. the online co-op is all I'd care about.

I would say that GFWL's limited regional availability alone makes it inferior to Steam.
my fallout 3 on steam still has GFWL
Dark Souls still sells well enough to not be considered abandonware by Bandai

BlazBlue was ported to WinRT. The original version isn't sold digitally now so might never be updated.

I hope they fix it. I still haven't played it and have been waiting for them to remove it first (in case of save loss like Batman.) Oh that would be sad. Waited to play it until it couldn't be played anymore.

DCT: heard that SSF4 AE is in fact not getting GFWL removed, despite being on that list, instead Capcom is going to let it go. Probably hoping it will force players to buy the Ultra upgrade DLC since they will be selling a DLC upgrade(for those with AE) and a stand alone version which will use Steamworks.
I hope you are wrong, but in case you are right I'm about to do something I don't think I have ever done on the Internet before....

Ahem....

FUCKERS!

:(

Fucking Capcom.

Fucking Codemasters.

Even EA isn't as bad about their old games as they are...
No mention of DoW2?

Hm.

I think it was a "no comment" from the publishers. I put it on my "play sooner" list for my backlog just in case.
