Breja: That... seems to be about as self-contradictory as possible.
Nop really, basically the real problem is my laptop and the new GZDoom/OpenGL. Now GZDoom needs much more horsepower than in the past.
But Even with the bad performance the game feels polished, complex and I perceive a lot of good work. Testing the limits of the engine. That does not mean that with the options maximized, this game could be more demanding than other TC's even for newer computers .

thraxman: Putting the word out that the complete chapters 1-3 of Blade of Agony is releasing tomorrow. Set during WW2 inspired by Return to Castle Wolfenstein its one of the most polished, well made free games I have personally played. Vids and screenshots devs site show off the bits from the currently available chapters and reviews by professional game press. Nothing special need to run it just follow the moddb links on the devs site.

Lifthrasil: WOOT! Thanks for the news. Chapters 1 and 2 were awesome! Better than the modern AAA Wolfensteins even. :-)
Amen!
Bump.

Change the renderer from OpenGL to Vulkan in-game. That should make all the sluggishness disappear. ;) At least it has run buttery smooth for me since then.

Can confirm this. Using the Vulkan renderer made the whole thing smoother on my end too. Still in some areas (mostly outside) the framerate sometimes jumps around a little. It was never unplayable but a bit more consistency would be nice. I hope they'll be able to improve this with future updates.
So, couple of things I gleaned from comments. Use the whole install, it doesn’t work very well if at if you try to just drop it into an existing gzdoom install. The version that comes with it should work fine, I have not had any issues so far apart from one gzdoom crash.

What can I say about the mod itself, it’s hugely fun. Lots of little things here and there really flesh it out. There is something very satisfying and 90s about opening a door and just letting rip with whatever your most powerful gun is. The levels are huge and detailed. Lots of secrets such as movable walls, hidden items and such like. Combat is fast and furious and there are a fairly good selection of enemies. The only note I had was it can be hard to find objectives, I know spoiled by modern day games of follow the big golden arrow!

So yes, really good fun, I would even recommend popping a donation to them, maybe it will convince the release some more chapters :o)

Yeah unfortunately it already reached unplayable low fps in the second level of the first chapter on my end. I think if they don't improve the performance of the whole thing by a lot in every level I'm already done and will only watch some videos on YT to see what other levels would have to offer. A real shame this runs like a turd.

It has presets regarding graphics quality and if you select the low performance setting (or potato), it runs quite smoothly. Just for some reason that setting isn't saved. I have to select it each time I start the game.

I haven’t had any performance issues on Vulcan renderer. I have found a few annoyances though. The game is very dark, had to turn brightness up. Particularly in chapter 2 the snow level, I couldn’t see anything, had to fiddle with setting to have a chance to hit anything. Also, even with the compass it’s hard to find things. I would advise to have some maps in picture form, something like “intel maps”. Iron sights on rifle are useless as you can only tell where aim from where the bullet hits. Otherwise it’s generally good, only encountered one major bug where the gate in the sub base wouldn’t open. Just starting chapter 3 now (had to go through it all!) fair few differences from previous version.

Well, you can turn on the crosshairs, to see where you are aiming. But you're right, the iron sights are still useless then.
In chapter 3 you will have an oil lantern for the dark parts of level 0. But that level also has infinitely spawning enemies, which is quite annoying.

Are there more missions with a time limit? Because I just finished the first one (the one where you blow up 3 crates with chemicals), with something like 1:50 left on the timer, and it was the first mission I didn't enjoy. I hate time limits in games.

I actually was surprised by how much fan I had with the game until then (new games with retro graphics aren't usually my thing, and I don't really pine for maze-like levels and hunting down colored keys). When that timed mission happened I realised it was mostly because it was such a stress-free experience so far. Being able to save anywhere at any time rather than rely on checkpoints like in many modern action games, I could play and enjoy shooting nazis without any fear of losing progress. But that big red timer counting down made up for all that as a potent stress generator.

I don’t remember that one (and I only just run through and am in part 3 now). Only timer I remember was at with the two bombs under the bridge. It is quite hard in parts though.

I agree. That special mission was the only part of the first two chapters that I didn't enjoy. Time limits suck. I don't enjoy deadlines in my real life work and I don't want any deadlines or time pressure in my games either.
I've yet to play the third episode, but I consider the first two to be better Wolfenstein games than the official Bethesda/MachineGames Wolfenstein titles.

Played few hours yesterday, it's fantastic. It's the best Wolf game since...RTCW
