If you click on an avatar in the chat section, it should load the previous chat discussion you've had with that user (or the initial message that user sent you, if that is the first time there's communication via chat between you two). Not sure why it doesn't complete loading in your case, but chat has been known to behave wonkily.

If a message gets send it will then stay in the chat window. The discussion can be read regardless of whether the other participant is online. Any one side can start a conversation that way.

Also, you should be able to install Barefoot Essentials fine (although it might not solve this particular issue), I am on Windows XP too and am using Firefox and the Greasemonkey plugin.

Thanks for all the detailed answers, I'll try to install greasemonkey and barefoot essentials anyway

EDIT: just installed barefoot essentials, don't see a message from avatar but sent a message and it appears on the right so maybe he started a conservation but didn't send a message, we'll soon solve the mystery

Barefoot Essentials is making the forum experience as a whole a lot better, you won't be able to live without it now that you've installed it ;)

This is likely the case. If somebody clicks that little "start conversation" button and never says anything, you'll still see them in your chat list and they'll see you in it. One of my favorite hobbies is replying to people when I see them pop up in my list and spook them when they realize I got in the first word.
Hey there!

I'm new here, haven't been on a forum in years. I would like to get my username changed from "DragonicHorizons" to Vaeryn.

If someone could possibly point me in the right direction (what I should do to fix this problem) I would greatly appreciate the support.

Thanks in advance.

The only way to change your username is to get the staff to do it. Either PM one of the blues (fables22 or JudasIscariot would be good choices) or file a support request. The former would probably be quicker.

This is a known bug. Sometimes answering a question will net you an extremely high amount of rep for no particular reason.

Really, really twully? I think you make up stories just for the sake of it.
I've read the trading/scammer threads but I still don't understand the procedure. Where do I report someone that I think is a scammer and how is it done, what do I write, copy paste the chat, etc?

GOG doesn't sanction trading so the best you can do let everyone in here know. It's kind of buyer beware and it's up to the users themselves to make sure everyone knows who not to trust.

Well I posted the situation on the trading thread yesterday, is there something else to do?

There used to be a Know Scammers Wiki but I have no clue if it is still being maintained.

https://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/Known_Scammers

It's actually not nearly as bad as it used to be, at least that we know of. I always think the worst ones the forum ever had, NES and Wakkalo, might still be in here and we just don't know it.
