Parvateshwar: I'm speaking as someone who liked the old Dooms and played some of Doom3. I file Doom in the same category as Duke Nukem, games that were fun and totally awesome in the 90s but have failed to keep up with modern shooters. With Mass Effect, Modern Warfare, Killzone, Gears of War, Half-Life, Halo, Crysis, Resistance etc., the market is absolutely saturated with big name shooters from the past 5 years, and if Doom 4 wants to stand out they are going to have to do a HELL of a lot of inventing. As Duke Nukem Forever pointed out, its an uphill battle trying to bring a game from the past up-to-date and to surpass those games. Sure, they have a decent sized fanbase, but that isn't going to compete with the annoyingly HUGE fanbase of those listed games, most of which have sequels, threequels, and octequels that are coming up.
On the other hand, Doom games were awesome and if this is a rumour it would be super sweet. Betheseda already reinvented Fallout and it was pretty damn fun, maybe they can bring this old franchise back and make it better than ever.
As you can see I'm torn, but whatever happens it's going to be interesting.
But despite all that inventing, none of them have managed to out-do Doom on its own turf. Unlike Duke Nukem 3d, which has been outdone by other games in most ways, Doom still has the best pure "mob shooter" gameplay out there. Even Quake I didn't manage to get it as right as Doom did (although I personally prefer Quake I just for it's unique art style). And this is not coming from someone who has fond childhood memories of Doom, either.
You know what I miss?

Medkits. I don't know which shooter I played recently that had medkits ...

Well, Medal of Honor Airborne and Far Cry 2 KINDA had medkits...:P

Along with regen health

To be honest, though, I don't think regen health is ALWAYS a bad thing. It gives combat a much smoother, more moment-focused feeling, and allows for some mistakes to be made without having to go back to your last quicksave. However, medkits add a lot more dynamicism, since your health varies from firefight to firefight.
Medikits are fine so long as there is an inventory. Those 'walk over to insta-heal' ones can fuck off though. Stalker has shown us the way it should be done.
After seeing what they did with Rage, it is probably for the best. Doom 3 wasn't even that good, anyway.
id used to be cool and now they're not. The public demands their head. News at 11.

Yeah because Doom 3 was such a raging success, right? Geez, can you get off your soap box at all? If you can't can you at least come up with a valid criticism of consoles?

But you know, I'll just enjoy Batman Arkham City some more on my casual, noob console...

Andremop: "Remember that, before you get too invested in this, at the moment the news is entirely unconfirmed."

Let's wait and see.
But since Doom 3 was nothing (NOTHING at all) similar to the Good Old Dooms (GODs), I don't feel so bad about this "news".

hedwards: That's sort of my thought. I liked the graphics of Doom 3, but it was a real challenge getting the room dark enough during the day to be able to make out what was going on in the game due to excessive darkness.

The original game was a lot better in that respect as you didn't have large dark areas that weren't punctuated by flickering lights.
The duct tape mod was pretty much a requirement to make the game enjoyable.

Verwandlung: It also has regenerating health, the "open" world is very very small, the enemies are never challenging (not even on the hardest difficulty).

There is basically nothing challenging about the whole game, just follow the silly storyline without meeting any memorable characters for 8-10 hours and reach the unsatisfying ending.
The Maw isn't challenging either yet remains an amazing game. There's many things that might be required of a great game, but challenge doesn't seem to be one of them.

I'm going to go against the grain and voice my 2 cents: Doom was the first game i ever owned, and it's still my all time classic fav. Doom 3 was a reinvention of the game and I actually really enjoyed it. I look forward to Doom 4 more then most other shooters and I plan on being a Doom Fan for life :)

Navagon: I really wish people would stop treating Kotaku as a source of information.
I find it a good source of entertainment. It's my version of a tabloid I guess.

It's good for that. But not for news. I wouldn't even trust RPS 100% without another source.

Yeah it's funny how they've a lot of high-tech stuff but didn't bothered to make a gun wich produces light by some means. Or why the guy can't hold a pistol in one hand, and a lantern in the other?

It was an active decision by the developers (to raise tension or something), however it was the wrong one, it made the game less fun.

Also why are game news sites using kotaku rumors?

Roman5: http://kotaku.com/5851953/doom-4-indefinitely-postponed-following-rages-disappointing-launch

Doom 4 pretty much cancelled.

"Zenimax and Bethesda made the decision based on the "the issues and reviews" surrounding RAGE's launch, which in their eyes has demonstrated "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id".

"company wide meeting held in Dallas, Bethesda and parent company Zenimax made the decision to "indefinitely postpone" development of Doom 4"

This is what happens when you sell your soul to the casual console market and backstab your entire fanbase.
So, with Warner Bros. officially announcing today that they're publishing the 360 version of Witcher 2, I suppose that's it for you here at this forum, right?

Can't have you spending your time in the community of a despicable publisher who sold their soul to the casual console market, after all.

How DARE you!! PC owners should be greatful for the one month delay of Arkham City. It's nothing to do with piracy, we want to make sure we support all resolutions and a keyboard.
