jefequeso: Ok, I really don't understand this at all. As far as I've heard, the only thing that made Rage a "casual console" game was its pop in and lack of graphics options. Unfortunate, of course, but hardly a "selling of the soul." And heck, they released a patch almost instantly that solved a lot of the problems.
I assume he is saying that because he is angry about Carmack's comments about consoles being their focus. It's hard to be angry at Carmack for having common sense though.

And the game is not casual at all, really. It's a straight-up shooter from 1999.
The VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda had this to say:
Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed – indefinitely or otherwise.

Honestly, the only real problem with Doom 3 was that it had "Doom" in the title. On its own it was actually quite a satisfyingly fun shooter. Not classic material, but the gunplay felt solid and there was a lot of it, and the atmosphere was cool in a dark Aliens-esquer sort of way. Even the parts where you couldn't see well were tense and exciting rather than annoying (for me at least). And last I knew, Carmack was saying that Doom 4 would return to its roots, so I was actually quite looking forward to it.

This is great news. I don't want a console developer ruining Doom.

SimonG: I would rather see a franchise pass away in dignity than going the way of "Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (the PS shooter)" or "Larry, Magna Cum Laude".
Um, Magna Cum Laude isn't the worst thing that happened to the Leisure Suit Larry franchise.

Box Office Bust... now that's how you kill a franchise.

None of that makes sense. If you are complaining that id are a console developer then it's their IP do do what they want with it. If you are saying Zenimax is a console publisher then you are simply wrong, they are in fact one of the few publishers who treat the PC well.

I'm trying to ignore the mere existence of this "game" ... oh Larry ... what have they done ...

I'm trying to figure out how Team 17 managed to murder the franchise.

I guess all they can do is Worm games.
I really wish people would stop treating Kotaku as a source of information.
Rage was a poor game for many reasons - for starters, the engine was just unsuitable for PCs and for games in general - with hardware being able to create proper lighting and shading, why create a system that bakes all of that into pre-rendered textures and then overlay them? Not only does it make the game needlessly HUGE, it also looks horrible up close.

I'm now replaying Fallout 3 with the HD texture pack and I can tell you: detailed textures add a lot, let you really feel part of the world. id fucked up big time with Rage because the world felt so ugly up close, that it was impossible for me to feel part of it, not to mention the tons of other problems that plagued the game. No interaction with the world because of the engine, no day or night cycles, linear design, so-so combat, etc. etc.

I really enjoyed Magma Cum Laude... I mean, the game Kinda sucked... but the dialogues were very funny - especially if you missed some correct answers. The parody of Grease was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on a game!

Never played Box Office Bust, but it sure looks like a bomb.

I'm speaking as someone who liked the old Dooms and played some of Doom3. I file Doom in the same category as Duke Nukem, games that were fun and totally awesome in the 90s but have failed to keep up with modern shooters. With Mass Effect, Modern Warfare, Killzone, Gears of War, Half-Life, Halo, Crysis, Resistance etc., the market is absolutely saturated with big name shooters from the past 5 years, and if Doom 4 wants to stand out they are going to have to do a HELL of a lot of inventing. As Duke Nukem Forever pointed out, its an uphill battle trying to bring a game from the past up-to-date and to surpass those games. Sure, they have a decent sized fanbase, but that isn't going to compete with the annoyingly HUGE fanbase of those listed games, most of which have sequels, threequels, and octequels that are coming up.
On the other hand, Doom games were awesome and if this is a rumour it would be super sweet. Betheseda already reinvented Fallout and it was pretty damn fun, maybe they can bring this old franchise back and make it better than ever.
As you can see I'm torn, but whatever happens it's going to be interesting.

Or go old school, most shooters that came after Halo ended up copying the wrong things and as a result I don't bother to play most of them. I had some fun with Borderlands, but like most of the recent shooters, it just isn't as good as the older games.

The fact that so many of them play better with a controller speaks volumes about the competence of the development teams involved.

FO3 was fun, the only thing is that it wasn't a FO game, I enjoyed it and played it quite a bit, but it wasn't canon and it wasn't anywhere near to being. Probably the biggest sin was the poorly written dialogue and factions that seem to exist purely for the purpose of attacking the MC.
