jefequeso: But in this day and age, that's never going to happen. At least, not from Id. I figure if Doom 4 manages to capture just a bit of the spirit of the originals, I'll be happy. And I'm really happy with the gameplay they showed. The pace and flow of combat looks a lot more like Id's pre-Doom 3 games.
Do take a look at the first gameplay video as well, if you haven't so far. You do need to hunt for keys, even if they are not keys this time but items that make sense for the level.

Yeah, the theme is there. But it was there in Doom 3 as well (hunting for PDAs instead of keys). I'd be up for seeing literally an HD incarnation of the mid 90s FPS formula, not just some of the basic ideas reworked into a modern framework. Which I realize will never happen outside the indie sphere. And even there, how many genuine retro FPS throwbacks have there been? Basically just Wrack and the RoTT Remake, to my knowledge. Everything else that presumes to be an "oldschool FPS" is basically just using the Painkiller / Serious Sam enemy mobbing design philosophy, or is banking on some abstract quality of "arcadeiness."

I tell ya what, if I had a budget and a team...

using the severed hand was hilarious.
Hmm... I dunno. The mars base video looked like the game might play alright. It all depends on feel, how enemies spawn, and what sort of freedom there is to navigate the map.

The hell video unfortunately looked like Halo 1, only more guns. :/
That Snapmap thing has me really interested. It is good to see a game get mod tools and even have them featured so prominently.

jefequeso: Wasn't it planned to be set on earth originally, before they decided to re-work it?
Yes, I'm pretty sure it was.

I enjoyed all Dooms too, D3 BFG edition included. Combat in D3 never actually felt different from what iD usually does, just slower, really.

To be honest, I'm pretty fucking positively sure this new incarnation is going to be better than what was abandoned, but the screens leaked from it made me really want to see that one completed and what it was all about, even if it was just completely Call of Dutified, silly and dull.

Probably because that one seemed to be bringing new stuff into the franchise (even if it is stuff overdone by everybody else) and this new one seems to just retread old threads and make an HD official version of Brutal Doom.

But I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy the hell outta this game, anyway. :D

I actually think Doom 3 is a far better Doom game than a lot of people, but it did have a bit of a different feel and pace. And of course it added all the "extra" horror stuff.

I wasn't a fan of the footage of the original Doom 4. World looked too Resistance/Halflife 2/The New Order-esque for my tastes. On the other hand, it does seem a bit tired to just retread the mars base thing again. I dunno. I think I'll be happy with Doom 4. The gameplay looks like it will be a lot of uncomplicated fun, and that's really all I need from a Doom game to enjoy it.
Looks better then Doom 3...which ain't saying much.

ehh.It certainly failed as a horror game(probably the cheapest collection of jumpscares I've ever seen a video game)and as a FPS it had absolutely nothing on the orginal two games. The shotgun was mighty satisfying to use but that's about it.

Who said it was trying to be like the first two games in general?! It clearly was doing its own thing. By that constantly comparing any new game in the franchise is just fuckin silly considering they will never EVER recreate the first two games.

I honestly don't see why they should try. Absolutely not evolution at all.

It's only fair to compare games from the same series.Considering Doom 1&2 still stand tall in their design more then 20 years later maybe they should have focused more on gameplay then graphics and venturing into a genre they know nothing about it seems.
The first video I saw was very meh. Slow, controller-centric gameplay, chainsaw that was pretty much a QTE and forced bullet time whenever anything more than one monster was on screen. Cliché brown typical id environments.

The second definitely changed things considerably, practically being an arena shooter. Still some suggestion of the chainsaw and certain kill moves wrenching control away from you - which would be especially annoying given the pace of play - but a big improvement and suggesting that the game is at least... OK. Environments still look like shit though. This definitely isn't the same company that has produced some of the best level design ever. Which is sad. But there it is.

If nothing else at least it's not as Call of Dudebro as the shit they were contemplating the first time around. Could be worth a purchase, but compared to Dishonored 2 and Fallout 4 this really is the poorest offering by far.

viperfdl: Who ever had the idea for that crap, was most likely a faggy gamepad-douche and should be kicked in the nuts.
Oh no, a designer coming up with a good idea for gamepad gameplay in a multi-platform game, what an asshole! At least the amount of guns you can carry clearly isn't limited to the D-pad standard and you will be most definitely able to select all of them directly via number keys and thus you won't have to deal with the selection menu and slowmo in the PC version.

Vitek: Considering how the world looks and how is everything quite brown and grim, I don't like how glowy are the item drops. They look really out of place. As if they fell out of Borderlands into this, quite different game.
I can't complain. It will probably only serve the game's pace and arcadey action if you don't have to search for that stuff much and the fact that the hero is wearing a helmet with a HUD projected onto it keeps the glowy items from ruining the immersion.

Nice console game.
