I guess how you take any and all of the alien movies may have something to do what you are expecting.
Alien still had a lot to do with H.R. Giger's art. Sort of surrealistic, original work... And that was fantastic for people who dig surrealistic, strange stuff. The atmosphere is created quite differently than say, Alien Resurrection.
For me, I'd give District 9 five stars, but then Elysium was really just about 2-3 stars for me.
But if you dig some good sci-fi oriented action, Alien vs Predator might be a good choice.
I'd bet there's going to be a crowd saying "Yei!" (that's a positive remark) and a crowd saying "Noo!" about the next Neill movie.
But I can't really see what Elysium was aiming at. Trying to get some hippies to buy box office tickets, those hippies with a secret passion for some mainstream shooting? :)

Has anyone seen his new movie yet? I know it's not out but pre-screenings maybe?

marsrunner: I didn't mind they killed Hicks and Newt, but seriously, you spend the whole second movie rooting for thier survival. They make it. Woo! Then you kill them off screen? That's not brutal, its cheap.
I like Alien 3. Its stylistically beautiful but in the script department is a hot mess (pun intended). I guess we should just be happy we didn't get the wooden monastery planet version they were working on before they changed it to a prison planet.

darthspudius: It was more realistic if you ask me. No one survives that kind of shit without being seriously fucked up in the head. That girl was going to be messed up for the rest of her life. But if she lived on the prison planet, would you rather she die of screen or get raped and abused by all those nasty inmates? :P

Edit: I never ever wanted her to survive. I think the fact that Ripley went back for her in Aliens was one of the worst plot elements they could of done. Sure the scenes after wards were excellent but Bishop and Hicks have to suffer because of some kid Ripley barely knows? Fuckin stupid!
No, I didn't want her on the prison planet period. They should have come up with a better, more original idea. I like Alien 3 in spite of itself. I think Find her did an amazing job with the crap he was given. Good acting (loved Charles Dance and Charles S. Dutton) and decent effects. Did like the ending, especially the work print ending.
Sorry, but Ripley going back for Newt was crucial to the plot, especially if you watch the extended version. Ripley as mother vs. Alien Queen as mother makes the final battle more memorable. And besides, Bishop is an android, and Hicks is a marine. They are probably better prepared for suffering. Now the person who should have suffered more was Burke. Slimy bastard!

It's just mushy crowd pleasing crap to be honest. Now if she died at the end of Aliens I would of been much happier. I'm not a fan of corny happy endings.

I haven't seen it. But I have it completely figured out if you want.

SPOILER :
In the end Aliens got finaly accepted by everybody once they formed a Mariachi band.

Breja: I'll just say it- I hated District 9. It was boring, unoriginal, made very little sense and was never the clever social commentary it was supposed to be. There is a ton of sf that did it before, and much better. getting a sequel.
What like Blade Runner I think Blade Runner is overly prententious shlock :P

That scene where Harrison Ford "retires" that female Replicant through the streets as she runs through glass windows is just so unsubtle. To me it screams,"YOU ARE KILLING A HUMAN BEING YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!"

I liked District 9 along with Sharlto Copley.
I disliked Elysium along with "Matt Damon!".

I can see this moving turning out well, or awful.

It as if the writers nor the director (nor anyone else in bad movies), take the time to sit down and really think the script/movie over.

people like... oh, I already said its name twice in this thread - no "Candymans law" for me!
Like Peter Jackson, he's a former indie to AAA director who is vastly overrated. Weta is what made the LOTR movies any good, and it's the same with District 9 - the special/digital effects crew, not Blompkamf. So no, I'm not sold on him.

Anything past the second was pure balls. The people who call Alien 3 criminally underrated are in fact criminally overrating it. I mean how do you make the alien look worse when Scott and Cameron made it look amazing years before? The plot makes no sense and the camera work reminds me of Battlefield Earth.
avatar
marsrunner: Well, it can't be much worse than Alien: Resurrection, Aliens vs. Predator, or Aliens vs. Predator 2: Requiem.
The concept art looks nice, but a lot can go wrong between now and release.
On the plus side, ignoring everything since Aliens is a good idea, and District 9 was excellent. Elysium was just okay.
My thoughts exactly. We might end up with a JJ Abrams situation which is nice.

I'm sick and tired of seeing everything I love turn to shit. ENOUGH ALREADY!. His status and connections doesn't give him the right to shit all over the Aliens universe. If he wants to brainwash people into accepting his way of seeing things, he should just fucking make a documentary or something. Not whore out the Alien name to create some Trojan horse to sneak into and take over people's minds. Fuck what the movies industry has turned into. It's disgusting. It has become so bad that often, I can't even fucking find a decent movie to watch that I have not already seen 10000 times. All these fucking people have to push their fucking agendas nowadays and to add insult to injury, ruin perfect universes in the process. Star Wars, Star Trek, Predator, Alien...one by one....universes destroyed.

I can get behind this, I loved District 9 and I think people are a bit too hard on Elysium. Weyland Yutani is perfect fodder for his brand of commentary and the guy knows how to direct gritty, visceral action. Besides, he couldn't do any more damage to the franchise than Ridley Scott at this point.

Though I still think Blomkamp should work on a Half-Life movie.

The only bad Alien movie that exists is Prometheus. And there are plenty of worse movies. He could do a lot more damage. Alien 3 wasn't a bad movie. It just made people butt hurt because Alien 3 = death of Hicks, Newt and Ripley.
Ow good, there's going to be an actual Alien Movie. Hearing the 'No Xenomorphs' for Prometheus 2 was deeply saddening.

I actually watched Prometheus without having a clue it was related to Aliens till about halfway through at which point I was mixed between wondering whether I'd seen the movie before and feeling it was horribly derivative, till it suddenly became clear it led into the alien movies.

Wasn't brilliant or anything but a good watch.

But ... Aliens for crying out loud, I love the buggers, pretty much all of them except the baby one at the end of 4, that was just disturbing.

I'm torn on the Newborn Alien. It's insanely horrifying, which is great! Then again, it makes me wanna throw up. Still a brilliant costume, though.
