marsrunner: Well, it can't be much worse than Alien: Resurrection, Aliens vs. Predator, or Aliens vs. Predator 2: Requiem.
The concept art looks nice, but a lot can go wrong between now and release.
On the plus side, ignoring everything since Aliens is a good idea, and District 9 was excellent. Elysium was just okay.

Elmofongo: I thought the first Alien vs Predator was OK. (And still surprisingly brutal for a PG-13 movie) What was wrong with that movie exactly?

Requiem was just disgusting
The first AvP was boring. Tediously boring. Cardboard characters with no personality, no plot and no surprises. If you have a movie without those things you should at least have some blood, gore and violence, especially in a movie based on two sci-fi horror/action classics. AvP couldn't even get that right. Not that I'd expect much from a movie directed by that hack Paul W. S. Anderson.
And yes, the 2nd one was just garbage, offensively bad.
Just for fun (out of 5 stars)
Alien: *****
Aliens: ****1/2
Alien 3: ***
Alien: Resurrection: **
Aliens vs. Predator: **1/2
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem: 1/2
I can see it turning out to be a solid movie, if they just have a good script, Blomkamp is a good director and if there's no huge arguments like there was with Alien 3 (an interesting mess in many levels) or just a bat shit insane script like Resurreciton (a good movie if you try to look at it something else than an alien movie) had, I can see him pulling it off.
I'll just say it- I hated District 9. It was boring, unoriginal, made very little sense and was never the clever social commentary it was supposed to be. There is a ton of sf that did it before, and much better. So no, I am not happy about this news at all, although it will probably still be better than Prometheus 2. I still can't believe that piece of crap is even getting a sequel.

I realy wish we could just get Alien vs Predator done right. I actually think the first AVP movie wasn't that bad for an action movie, but it definately did not live up to it's potential. Don't even mention the second one.

But you know what I would like to see most, an I know I never will? Superman vs Aliens. I still think that comics was the best Alien-related thing since Aliens, no joke.

htown1980: And Alien Resurrection is full of social commentary about why you shouldn't root an alien?
I thought it was about how White women can be good in the WNBA as well if they use steroids.
So it probably will include something like the big corporations don't give a fuck about little people being eaten by aliens. Corporations not giving a fuck worked well in District 9 but not so much in Elysium which was rather boring and cheap.

Just like the first four Alien movies, then? ;-)
Hopefully he can pull off something as unforgiving and dark as Alien 3. That movie is criminally underrated in so many ways. They killed the little girl, best movie EVER!!! :P

yeah but more accented like "We're underpaid, long workhours, shitty support, bad cafeteria and uh yeah and then there's the alien running around or whatever but anyway we're on strike!" rather than the original "Oh shit evil alien's running around!"

htown1980: I like Neill Blompkamp. I reckon this will be alright if it gets made.
avatar
tinyE: I gotta bitch about this. His movies are heavy social commentary and when I watch an Alien movie I don't want social commentary, I want adult monsters ripping people to shreds and baby monsters bursting out of chests.

Side note: I just got a word on Yahoo that the next G.I. Joe movie is rumored to have at least one member of MASK in it. :D
avatar
htown1980: You know Aliens is full of social commentary on the Vietnam war, right?

And Alien 3 is full of social commentary about the justice system and the abolition of the death penalty?

And Alien Resurrection is full of social commentary about why you shouldn't root an alien?
You are seriously taking all the fun out of this conversation. :P

I didn't mind they killed Hicks and Newt, but seriously, you spend the whole second movie rooting for thier survival. They make it. Woo! Then you kill them off screen? That's not brutal, its cheap.
I like Alien 3. Its stylistically beautiful but in the script department is a hot mess (pun intended). I guess we should just be happy we didn't get the wooden monastery planet version they were working on before they changed it to a prison planet.

Do take a look at the Aliens comics. That is more or less standard operation procedure for the corporations in that world. Not that the people are better (hey, these cattle seem to be infected with something, let's just hustle them to the containers bribing the health officials so they can be shipped off world while we get paid. I'm sure it's nothing bad).

I don't know, that could at least be something weird and beautiful and memorable. The prison was such a generic, dull enviroment. Also, I can't help but wish they didn't kill Charles Dance and had him take over as the new protagonist of the series.

It was more realistic if you ask me. No one survives that kind of shit without being seriously fucked up in the head. That girl was going to be messed up for the rest of her life. But if she lived on the prison planet, would you rather she die of screen or get raped and abused by all those nasty inmates? :P

Edit: I never ever wanted her to survive. I think the fact that Ripley went back for her in Aliens was one of the worst plot elements they could of done. Sure the scenes after wards were excellent but Bishop and Hicks have to suffer because of some kid Ripley barely knows? Fuckin stupid!

For me District 9 was just a 7\10 and Elysium barely a 6\10, so I don't have big hopes..
I'll be hoping for something good here, but not gonna bet much on it. After Aliens, one of my fav movies ever, the series has been extremely disappointing over and over.
