koima57: Chrono Trigger, because the Android version of Final Fantasy VI has been redesigned visually, not for the best in comparison with the Super Nintendo original...

Though you have already played CT, so FF 6 seems the logic choice between the two, nevertheless.
I never really saw too much of the original art in ff6, but the new art looks pretty decent from the screens.
Not only is FF6 the far better game, you ALSO haven't played it. Solved.

Ki11s0n3: Is FF6 as good as people say despite the 14 main characters?
There's only one main character. It just so happens that in that game, the VILLAIN is *the* main character.

Of course, in either case, I would recommend NOT rewarding them by buying fucked-over versions like they are peddling now.

just don't buy the android versions. and touchscreen controls work badly for the parts of the game that require some fast reflexes

I really don't have any other options right now until I can get a new handheld or pick up a cheap 3ds

Gnostic: I don't like the smartphone version because of always online DRM. I heard that Chrono Trigger is the same.

PookaMustard: I have the game from the Amazon Appstore; it never asks for always on DRM; only the initial Amazon DRM is mandatory (which I bypass with Lucky Patcher)
Well you use some sort of hack, so that may explain why.

Ki11s0n3: I thought about getting Secret of Mana as well

It mainly just comes down to me wanting a really good rpg to play on my phone
Secret of Mana is a really good RPG! And it wasn't stylistically ruined, unlike Final Fantasy VI.

Actually, I could dispute your part of your claim; not the "good" part (Secret of Mana is a good game), but rather the "RPG" part; collision checks play too much of a role in the battle system for me to call it an RPG.

Not exactly. You attack with weapons by pressing a button, and the attack needs to collide with an enemy to hit. (I believe the game still does a dice roll on top of that, so an attack that collides with the enemy can still be declared a miss.) You can also charge your attacks, and after you attack, there is a short time when any further attacks will do minimal damage.

Of course, all that is said in the last paragraph does not apply to magic. To cast a spell, you open the menu, choose a spell, and choose a target. No need to aim your spells, and no chance that the spell will randomly miss. Also, no cooldown between spells, which can be abused to spam offensive spells until the enemy dies. (Note, however, that if you use too many attack spells on the same target in too short a time, the total damage will be capped at 999.)

Also, you have a party of 3 characters, but you can only control one at a time (unless you have extra controllers (and a multitap if you want to control all 3) and are able to use them all at once). The other two characters are controlled by the game's AI, though you can have other human players control them.

Good to know, thanks.

MarioFanaticXV: Final Fantasy VI is the pinnacle of the RPG genre. Chrono Trigger just feels nonsesnsical for the most part- it had an interesting battle system, but never really made use of it.
avatar
dtgreene: I can't see how FF6 could be the pinnacle of the genre when it's inferior to its immediate predecessor.
Final Fantasy VII was only praised because it brought FMVs enforce to consoles. It's one of those that was pushed solely on graphics, and not even the actual in-game graphics at that; and those never stand the test of time. Nomura is what killed the series, and VII was the beginning of that.

Ah, too action for your tastes?

I think you misread my post. FF6's predecessor was FF5, which I consider the best game in the series by far.

FF7 is actually worse than FF6; they took FF6, got rid of the positive aspects of the game, made the negative aspects worse, and added more negative aspects.

This hack only bypasses the initial Amazon DRM (the first time verification); it doesn't bypass any online DRM because there is none to begin with.

In spite of the massive stats screen, the elemental magic, and the very RPG style elemental system?
