It's hard to just pick one, my contenders would be:

Syberia 2
Machinarium
Another World
Stasis
Shelter 2
Shadowgate (2014)
Lumino City
Samorost 2 & 3

My #1 pick would probably be Samorost 3.
Low Rated!? :P

Hey, I'm not the one selling the damn thing! I just have the complete lack of class to post pictures from it. :P

It's one of my favorite games.

DaCostaBR: In terms of art direction. I was thinking which I would place on top.

My pick would be Okami. It's almost like a painting in motion, although looking back on it without rose tinted glasses I wish the terrain was a bit less polygonal, and the colors were a little more vibrant, but I still think it is phenomenal.

(hmm ok...maybe not. But we're still happy with the looks :D)

For a real answer, i'd choose Guilty Gear Xrd Sign. Gorgeous 3D that looks like an anime (the best cel-shading i've ever seen).
Here's a very interesting video about how they achieved such a great look:

Final Fantasy 8

Dragon Age Inquisition. (Sadly not a good game).

Master of Orion 1 classic. (Call me nostalgic but I still prefer its graphics to newer 4x games).

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Great gameplay, I suppose. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Hmmm... I'd have to say Endless Legend. I love the art style and how it unfolds as you move the map around.

With that special kind of multi-tasking. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Mr.Caine: Art direction wise? Silent Hill 2 is up there.
Unfortunately it didn't age well, just watched some gameplays, and it looks weird. It's kinda hard to explain, but it doesn't look great like I thought.

technically it definitely shows it's age. but if we're taking just the art direction I still hold it as a pinnacle of it's genre since I can't think of any horror games which manage to give as much depth and nuance to the story of a game as SH2 does.
