DieRuhe: And curious: what does "look like a movie from the nineties" mean?
avatar
KasperHviid: Correction - it's more like taking place in the nineties. This can be most clearly seen in that home page one of the characters made. But in general, the movie aim for a much slower pace than modern horror. The retro of this poster goes much further back!
Got it. ;-)
Can't believe nobody has mentioned The Others yet! Very effective movie, plenty of classic ghost scares and a very creepy atmosphere.

Well, I mean, that's a lot of movies. Perhaps you should be more specific about which of the others you're talking about.

The first reply in this thread mentioned The Others.
IMHO, it's worth a second mentioning! :-p

Back then, someone spoiled the ending for me before I got to watch it .. dammit!

I think Sixth Sense (1999) and The others (2001) were the ones that made trick ending obligatory in horror. Was this a good thing? Maybe it was, I'm not totally sure.

Oops, I read right over it!

Anyway, trick endings are fine, but not when they get to feel obligatory. I think the fake-out ending that sets up a sequel is actually worse.

The problem with The Others is that it came out at approximately the same time as Sixth Sense. That ending has been used for ages, and with good effect, but with two major movies using it at almost the same time it was a mess, and The Others was unlucky enough to be the 2nd one into the party making it look like the copycat which probably isn't very fair.
