Here's my own favorites. I wanted to include Poltergeist, but realized that it doesn't really count, since it isn't really about any specific ghost, but more about random supernatural stuff.

A Chinese Ghost Story (1997)
Really trippy yarn taking place in ancient china. martial arts, stop-motion, freaky special effects, tragedy, romance, slapstick and shao-lin rap. There is a tiny bit of depth, with the shallow city life juxtaposed against nature and spirits. Slightly offtopic, perhaps.

Dark Water (2000)
The success of The Ring inspired the movie industry to create a horror movie based on a short story collection written by the guy who also wrote the book behind The Ring.

Ghost Story (1981)
Not so sure about this one, but I remember it as scary .. or one scene, at least. Make-up effects by Dick Smith!

Dead Silence (2007)
I don't remember if this one qualify as a ghost movie, but its attempt to recreate that solid Hammer horror feel just nails it. And dolls always delivers the scare.

The Ring (1998)
Most people who likes horror have seen it, and if not, have gotten the ending spoiled anyhow. But still, pretty good ghost movie! (the book is good too)

Innkeepers (2012)
Designed to look like a movie from the nineties. A Bit of a slow burn, though.

Shutter (2004)
Photography-themed ghost story. Scariest one I seen, ever. The movie has no originality whatsoever, but build a really scary experience with the tried and true asian horror tropes. Never seen the american remake - that would shatter my hipster creds.
The others
I really enjoyed Below.

Not as good, but still quite enjoyable, if a bit cheesy/silly: House on Haunted Hill and The Haunting

And of course Monster House which kind of qualifies. That's the best one!
Oh yes, and Paranorman of course

What, no mention of "Ghost"!!!!????

I jest.

And curious: what does "look like a movie from the nineties" mean?
Ghostbusters, obviously! ANd I rather liked the Woman in Black TV movie from 1989 (I haven't seen the new one).
The Conjuring

The Changling (George C. Scott)

Poltergeist

The Fog(Carpenter version),

Gothika,

Mirrors,

Witchboard(only the first one),

The Legend of Hell House,

The Bunker,

and the good old Poltergeist.

As others have mentioned already, Below is also really good.

Correction - it's more like taking place in the nineties. This can be most clearly seen in that home page one of the characters made. But in general, the movie aim for a much slower pace than modern horror. The retro of this poster goes much further back!

Nice poster. Good posters are so rare nowadays. Usually it's just a photoshopped photo of the main actor(s).

Yeah, and book covers are even worse. They use stock photos! :-|

On a more positive note - I just discovered that I have unwatched DVDs (attached)

I did watch the one in the lower left corner - that one is awesome!
