011284mm: it sounded a little like the writer is complaining that games are just not real enough for them.
catpower1980: The only games which come to my mind regarding some sort of "armor awareness" are the Dark Souls where the weight of the armor and the strength of your character had a direct influence over your mobility. I liked how the "rolling" was affected if you had a too heavy armor. Most of the RPG's don't even reflect that (weight is just a stat).
Although I am glad that the realism added to your gameplay, would the game have been as enjoyable if the only change had been that the armours were less realistic? That is my point. Developers can choose where and how they distribute their time and energy.
The time and energy spent coding and animating the changes in armour could theoretically have been diverted elsewhere had they have chosen. If they had chosen less realistic armour mechanics and gone with more story, locations or enemies would you have cared, would the game have suffered. Who knows, the developers went with what they wanted the game to be and it is a grand success.
Just for my personal preference I care more for the escapism then the realism, the same as the articles author cares about realism being given a care. I do not think that the author should not get a voice, but when I had finished reading it felt less informative to me, and more like the author wanted more people to see how unrealistic the armours are and then ask for more realism. Without thinking just how much effort already goes into making the games without adding realism.
