011284mm: it sounded a little like the writer is complaining that games are just not real enough for them.
The only games which come to my mind regarding some sort of "armor awareness" are the Dark Souls where the weight of the armor and the strength of your character had a direct influence over your mobility. I liked how the "rolling" was affected if you had a too heavy armor. Most of the RPG's don't even reflect that (weight is just a stat).

Indeed, that's the thing that impressed me most about the Souls games. Yes, literally the thing I liked most about the series. That feeling of weight and energy, no other game I've ever played got this right.

Although I am glad that the realism added to your gameplay, would the game have been as enjoyable if the only change had been that the armours were less realistic? That is my point. Developers can choose where and how they distribute their time and energy.
The time and energy spent coding and animating the changes in armour could theoretically have been diverted elsewhere had they have chosen. If they had chosen less realistic armour mechanics and gone with more story, locations or enemies would you have cared, would the game have suffered. Who knows, the developers went with what they wanted the game to be and it is a grand success.
Just for my personal preference I care more for the escapism then the realism, the same as the articles author cares about realism being given a care. I do not think that the author should not get a voice, but when I had finished reading it felt less informative to me, and more like the author wanted more people to see how unrealistic the armours are and then ask for more realism. Without thinking just how much effort already goes into making the games without adding realism.

Same here and my escapism is shutting down when it encounters too much bullshit that doesn't make any sense.
I know that I'm spoiled because of my years in practicing HEMA the same as a movie is somewhat spoiled when I read the book, but the overall realism in armour and melee weapons is so ridiculously low although so many games feature those things, that I can only wonder.

Maighstir: Playing bagpipes like the scots may also work... of course, they're largely descendants of the celts.

Klumpen0815: Only that the Scots were about the last culture to include the bagpipes, they are more a symbol of the middle east and Europe (especcially France) when it comes to tradition. The only reason why bagpipes are associated with Scotland today is the military.
"Descendants of the celts" was more a humorous reference to being "crazy mother fuckers", from the replied-to post. Thanks for the history lesson though.

A sort of follow-up on the original article in the OP, from Obsidian's Josh Sawyer (of Icewind Dale, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity fame):

If it fits the original topic and purpose I rather resurrect the corresponding thread, no matter how old, than open yet another new one.
I guess I'm just economically inclined like that.

catpower1980: Yeah that's for you all medieval lovers who want to read a lenghty argumented article about armor design in games and their real life purposes (so yeah, boobs armor is dangerous but whatever....):

To add to your link thought I'd mention him since I haven't notice anyone mention him; Shad from the youtube channel 'Shadiversity'. He's always so enthusiastic and is quite entertaining lol.

I suggest you give him a watch as he covers a variety of different things. From 'realistic game animations' to 'Biggest katana Misconceptions Debunked'' he covers a wide variety of things to do with medieval weaponry, armour, and even discusses aspects of fantasy having to do with magic and such. I've turned this into a bit of a waffle but you get the idea lol.

Armor is kind of pointless when you have a gun, and what is a fireball spell but a fantasy gun?

Everyone gangsta until the wizard brings a gatling wand of lightning.
It's just a bunch of wands tied together with a string.
