Thinking it may be the disc you're using - maybe you're using a newer pressing? My Hellfire CD uses a 16-bit installer - used a Win 98 VM to get the needed files, heh.

dudalb: Just weird ness. then.
I am a bit surprised that Hellfire has a 32 bit setup,in 1997 most games had the 16 bit setup.
But the copy and paste method you gave worked just fine.
avatar
waltc: Runs fine for me in 64-bit Win10, version 1903, build 18356.1. (Insider's) Remember that Win95/98 were 16/32-bit OSes built on top of a DOS shell. Either one would work but 16-bits was mainly included for compatibility with what at the time were older games. Any developer looking for both power and longevity for his game would go the 32-bit route, of course. That was a wise choice, because even the latest Win10 (my build above, for instance) will run 1997 32-bit Windows software without a huge amount of hassle.

Pond86: Are you using GOG's version or the original? Does Diablo run fine? Is it just Hellfire that has issues?
avatar
gamesfreak64: Lost the original during cleaning and moving old stuff, so i got the GOG version , instabuy ofcourse , prepaid, and now you cannot refund because it doesnt work, they need bank account : ($_$)
so offering paysafe is nice but they should mention the paysafe account that is upgradable via bak and cheques, not prepaid paysafe card , a ticket wit x amount of euros or dollars, they cannot be refunded, so ....
So does Hellfire run but badly for you with Enchanced? And does Diablo from GOG run fine?

x6kx3: Hi,

I was hoping you could add this to help everyone else out since this is stickied.

To play multiplayer Hellfire retail:
-Install LogMeIn Hamachi
-Create a channel and invite friends
-Go to Hellfire install directory and run the ipxwrapper.exe (This is assuming you ran the Hellfire Enhanced. In my case I put all my Hellfire files in the GOG Diablo install folder, yes the one GOG Diablo runs out of)
-Make sure Hamachi is your primary and when you highlight Hamachi in the list that it is checked
-Start multiplayer and choose LAN (IPX)

I can confirm that the cowquest, barb, monk, nest, and bard work. I haven't had Theo or the crypt spawn yet (or I havent gotten there yet, clvl10)

Happy Slaying
LogMeIn Hamachi seems to be a VPN. I dont really want to make people use a VPN to play online for Hellfire in my guide as i'm trying to keep it original as possible. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Multiplayer is something i'm looking into for the guide but i'm looking to keep as close to the original as possible.
Thanks for all the hard work Pond. I've never played Hellfire and I just ordered a copy off eBay. Can't wait to play. I'm stoked.

Google result:

Computer: Diablo requires an IBM PC or 100% compatible computer, with a Pentium 60MHz or better processor. Your computer must have at least 8 megabytes of RAM for a single player game. ... Operating System: You must be utilizing Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 to play Diablo on your system.

So i guess a pentium would be the best 100% compatible to run the game well, 100 mhz wouldbe enough, 133 or 166 would be better, but old compuaters are gone and we have all double cores ( at least) and usually a quad core or more .

RA95 menu has a lot of settings , and i managed to get it work on my system, maybe Diablo game needs some Cpu managing options aswell, many problems are always CPU and or GPU related , many topics with tons of posts.

Anyway i hope i get a wallet refund so i can use that to buy a game that will run )without me having to fix it myself to make it work on my system. Red Alert ( have 2 or 3 retail copies) seems to be free read some news about it have a fixed version to make it run.

Hello
i wanted to ask as I have the original hellfire cd from the 90's ,I installed it with the guidance of this post and works fine though I tried to transfer a character from Diablo (dx) to hellfire (changing from sv to hsv file extension) ,the game recognizes my character but the whole inventory is clear without the equipment it had .
Is this normal? As I know hellfire has a new catalogue of equipment ,the previous from the vanilla game is n't compatible here?

From what i've read online thats how it works:

"In Hellfire you lose all items - but not gold, so what I do is selling the items and keeping $$$ to buy equipment after the transfer. Do that, then copy the save into hellfire directory and you're set"
Yes, normal. Only gold can be transfered.
Better "clean" reinstall. You didnt forget about official patch 1.1? Better start new game.
Thank you very much .. That's the case then, pity as i can't transfer my precious weapon and armor.I think the hellfire version after the enhanced pack is 1.2..

Pond86: So Hellfire from CD works fine with GOG's version. Heres how to do it. I did this under Windows 10.

For original Diablo (Non GOG scroll down.)

1) Install Diablo. (GOG's install should run fine.)

2) Install Hellfire. (HD Voices are optional.)

Make sure to not let Hellfire update via setup or register or anything.

(Setup should run if it fails to then copy the following files from the Hellfire CD to a new folder in your Diablo folder.) (Feel free to name the new folder to whatever you want.)

You will need:

hellfire.exe
hellfire.mpq
HELLFRUI.DLL
hfmonk.mpq
hfmusic.mpq
hfvoice.mpq
storm.dll

(If you have copied these files across rather than running setup.exe then skip to step 4.)

3) Go to C:\SIERRA\ and copy the entire HELLFIRE folder to your Diablo installation.

4) Download Hellfire Enchanced If you don't do this then Hellfire will ask for the Diablo CD. It shouldn't change anything else other than making Hellfire more reliable under newer systems. Extract it to Hellfire's folder and replace anything it wants to.

The game should then run from hellfire.exe.

You can then uninstall Hellfire and Sierra Utilities from Settings then Apps if on Windows 10 or Control Panel on others or 10, as uninstalling it through Sierra Utilities does nothing. If you just copied the files over then you can ignore this.

[Optional] To get Hellfire running using GOG's wrapper (as discovered by Realpsojed):

1) Run Diablo Launcher from GOG, select Video Settings and setup your graphics.

Recommended setup is:
Display mode: Same as Desktop
Presentation: Windowed - integer scaling

2) Copy the ddraw.dll, dxcfg.exe and dxcfg.ini files from Diablo\dx into your Hellfire folder (replacing the files it wants to replace.)

Next time you run hellfire.exe it should work at a higher resolution though much like GOG's version you will get black bars down the side of widescreens.

Any issues with the above feel free to ask here or PM me and i'll try to help you.

Non GOG Versions of Diablo Only!

If you own Diablo on the original CDs under modern systems heres how to get it working:

1) Install Diablo. (Setup should run fine, even under 64 bits. If it doesnt PM me and i'll try to assist you.)

Make sure to not let Diablo update via setup or register or anything.

1a) [Optional] Install the official Diablo patch 1.09. Link is here unless you already have it. We dont let setup update as it will break Hellfire.

HELLFRUI.DLL
hfmonk.mpq
hfmusic.mpq
hfvoice.mpq
storm.dll

3) Download Hellfire Enchanced If you don't do this then Hellfire needs compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, as this mod just makes Hellfire more reliable under newer systems. Extract it to Hellfire's folder and replace anything it wants to.

Though this version Hellfire will still ask for Diablo's CD. GOG's version of Diablo doesn't need any CDs.

Hellfire should run then fine.

Any issues with the above feel free to ask here or PM me and i'll try to help you.
i followed all these instructions and still cannot get hellfire to run i don't know if i missed a step or misread an instruction but for whatever reason either get black screen or "please insert CD" in a tiny window in full screen.

Make sure you have installed Hellfire Enhanced to Hellfire's directory replacing any files it wants to otherwise it will ask for a CD.

Feel free to use one of the other mods listed in the Diablo forums instead of Enhanced, it should work the same if you wish.

Also make sure you have the following files in your Hellfire dirctory:

You might have more if you installed it through setup.

hellfire.exe
hellfire.mpq
HELLFRUI.DLL
hfmonk.mpq
hfmusic.mpq
hfvoice.mpq
storm.dll

Failing the above does the original Diablo run alright?
Yes and No
i use to have it running fine with mininal issues
as for recently the game delivers an error message Diabdat.MPQ is missing

It sounds like something went wrong during Diablo's installation, and that it didn't set the registry keys properly. Try Thiev's solution.

it goes to full screen then black screen then no screen and it runs in the background doing nothing.
i have done this process a good nine or ten times now just to make sure that i am not missing a step somewhere.

Ok so if you try to launch Diablo from diablo.exe it runs in the background and does nothing? Have you tried it in compat mode for Windows XP SP 2?

And Hellfire does the same now? Or do they both still ask for the CD?
