Xan is an interesting case. While he has the Moonblade, he is too fragile and unprotected [usually] to mix it up in melee and thus get any use out of the Moonblade!

As an Enchanter, yes he is unable to cast Invo/Evo spells, i.e. the flashy mass damage one like Fireball, especially. However, he does have access to a lot of disabling spells, which are basically the same thing as a fireball - if all of your enemies are asleep, for example, then they are pretty much dead anyway, given how easy it is to dispatch them while asleep.

Dynahier, as an Evoker is denied spells from *two* schools, both Enchantment/Charm *and* Conjuration/Summoning - and any experienced player can tell you that the various versions of Monster Summoning X are *very* useful.

So no, Xan doesn't have access to Fireball etc, but he *does* have access to lot of spells Dynaheir doesn't - which balances things out, IMHO. Personally, I'd rate Sleep as a much more valuable spell than Fireball - you will be using it for longer than Fireball and as a 1st lvl spell, it is not only quick to cast but you can have a lot of them memorized [especially with the Ring of Wizardry, which *doubles* the # of 1st lvl spells you can cast per day.]

As for his personality >laffs<... yeah it takes a bit of getting used to and certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Certainly, I'd recommend that people check him out and use him to best advantage, just as they should check out Dynahier, as well. As for Edwin, well... no thanks. Yes, he's a great mage, but he's no hero and has no place in my Heroic party! :) To each their own, of course.

Elmofongo: So why have the strongest Long Sword in the entire game (Moonblade) and have it only used by the worst party member :P
avatar
Coelocanth: Because the game's not about recruiting the uberest NPCs... :P

avatar
Elmofongo: Also where do I find this Grey Wolf, it says he is in the Nashkel Mines but where exactly, because he has the second strongest long sword (Long Sword +2)
avatar
Coelocanth: Not in the mine. He shows up outside on the same map as the mine. Southwest corner. Talk to Prism (the artist) and Grey Wolf will eventually show up if you choose the right convo options with Prism.

Nimbul is an evil motherf#cker, good thing I had enough Gold to revive the four party members who died.
Heh, those encounters can be tough as nails, especially the first time when you have no idea what is coming, nor where. The first assassin (well, second I guess), outside an early Inn, had me stumped the first time I played. One Magic Missile, and BAM, you're DEAD!

Probably the most useful tip for BG1 is to equip everybody with ranged weapons. Especially at level 1-3, toe to toe combat will rip you a new a-hole, but if your enemies drop dead before they can get up close and personal, your life will be much safer :)

OK help:

I am trying to free Branwen since she is turned to stone, so I bought the Stone to Flesh scroll, but apperantly none of my magic users can read the scroll.

My magic users:

Invoker
Paladin
Enchanter
Druid

The scroll can by used by anybody. It is not a learnable scroll, it is used from the quick slots, like potions. Place it in a slot, click on it and target Branwen.

Elmofongo: I have my fighter at level 2 with plate armor and plenty of potions.
I am curious - What kind of stats did you roll? I am thinking:

18/xx Strength
18 Dexterity
18 Constitution
9 Intelligence
9 Wisdom
10 Charisma

Either Neutral Good or Lawful Good
2 Skill in Large Swords and 2 Skill in Bows

I played a long time ago and finished with a Paladin / Cavalier. I read great things about converting the Fighter into a Berserker / Cleric in BG2, but that will require more wisdom.

If you take Imoen with you, you do not need any points (other than the minimum) in Charisma. Just use her as your front man. With 16 CHA she's more than capable of fulfilling that roll. Your roll above could then look like:

For BG1 (Intelligence doesn't matter at all for a fighter)
18/xx Strength
18 Dexterity
18 Constitution
7 Intelligence
18 Wisdom
3 Charisma

For BG2 (higher intelligence [min 8/ideal 12] needed for survivability against some foes)
18/xx Strength
18 Dexterity
18 Constitution
8 Intelligence/12 Intelligence
13 Wisdom/17 Wisdom
3 Charisma
^^What you have above is a better use of 82 points. I remember getting very frustrated trying to roll up 90 points for a Fighter Character. The Neutral Good Alignment instead of Lawful Good is so that the option is open to change into a Berserker in BG2. The high Wisdom score is for dual classing into a Berserker / Cleric. I never actually did try to play a Fighter with the intention of dual classing to Cleric.

The only time I played BG from start to finish was with a Paladin / Cavalier.

There is no bad consequence of 3 Charisma, right? It means they treat you like garbage in Candlekeep. Nobody wants to follow you because you are a nut. So you let Imoen be the brains of the operation and put her in charge as you said.

KHHill91: There is no bad consequence of 3 Charisma, right?
There is zero consequence, so long as that person is not leading the party. The party leader's CHA is all that counts.
Note that there is also Ajantis, the Paladin, available to fill the party leader slot [both as battle leader and "chat" leader] with a 17 Charisma. Will get you another 5% reduction in store prices along with whatever you are getting from Reputation.

He is not difficult to find if you have made it to the FAI map. Not a real option for an Evil party bent on being EVIL >laffs< but otherwise a viable comrade.
Heh - I just rolled a Fighter with:
18/81 Strength
18 Dexterity
18 Constitution
18 Intelligence
18 Wisdom
3 Charisma

Then I pooched him by choosing 2 points in Missile Weapons and Spiked Weapons instead of the more normal Bow / Large Swords or at least Axe. I find it funny that the Morning Star has the same damage as a Bastard Sword, and one better Speed Factor. Using a shield and throwing darts at +3 to hit and +3 to damage for Mastery should be pretty fun to watch. I think the drawback is I cannot seem to find a +2 Flail or a +2 Morning Star.

Going into BG2 this will not matter as I can completely reconfigure the character. On top of that I have a lot of choices, like Berserker Cleric, or Kensai Mage.

KHHill91: I cannot seem to find a +2 Flail or a +2 Morning Star.
There are none in vanilla BG1, only +1s. However, there is Kiel's Morning Star (+3 cursed berserking) in Durlag's Tower, if you have Tales of the Sword Coast.
Quick Question:

There are no Dragons in Baldur's Gate 1?

How can it be a Dungeons and Dragons game with Dragons :P
