Tuthrick: I don't have anything good to say about Beamdog, especially after they called the original games "sexist"
avatar
ydobemos: They didn't call them sexist, they said there was sexism in them. And there is. And they didn't change any of it - they just bore it in mind when writing new stuff.
Pro tip: don't insult fans or the games you're trying to "enhance" and don't shoehorn 20 years old games by modern "politics", or bad things will happen. Lo and behold, what reputation Beamdog has now.

Nope. Amber Scott specifically said certain characters in the original games were sexist towards women. Jaheira and Safana. So she changed them for Siege of Dragonspear.

Stig79: Yes. They are bad. Most of the bad stuff happened after their 2.3 patch or whatever it was, when they changed the UI and lots of other things to make the game mobile-phone friendly.

Captainchicken84: Shut the fuck up, you goddamn troll, those changes were good and necessary, you can still play the old versions of the game if you don't like it!

I'm so sick and tired of reading your shit, from you and your anti beamdog brigade, i wish they would ban you from here and your troll companions too.
If those changes were necessary, how come players are still playing the original games, without those "necessary changes" 20 years later?

Yes I still play the original game too. But the originals aren't the topic of this thread, are they? Or did you miss the bit where the OP specified the thread being about the EE versions?

You might want to look up what a troll actually is. You are using that buzzword wrong. Trolls don't back up their arguments or make a case for them. I do.

Banning people for expressing opinions you don't like? Ahhh....part of the Special-Snowflake Generation, aren't you? Well I am sure you have plenty of safe-spaces nearby where you can pet your therapy-puppy. There there.

Aaaaaaand another Beemflake goes ballistic. Haha!
You are welcome to the rest of your opinion, but this

Roahin: For example, most of the "Enhanced Edition" are a collection of free mods that we the gaming community had been working on for decades. Beamdog appropriated them all, slapped an "Enhanced Edition" sticker on them turned around and sold them to the consumer.
is simply false. BGEE and BG2EE incorporate two mods--One Pixel Productions and BG2 Fixpack--for which permission was sought and granted. IWDEE includes four mods for which permission was sought and granted.

I read it wrong. My bad.
Thanks for your Answers.
I'm kinda split on this if i read the responses, due:
I watched some Gameplay of both, and i've to say if it comes down to UI and Cutscenes, i prefer the EE, due both of them really looks somewhat dated and less intuitive in original / classic. Howevern at the Point here, where people pointed out that Beamdog addes some political Agenda to the Characters it's kind of an lackluster. I'm one of these People, who thinks except for Games which Story focus on that, there shouldn't be any kind of political correctnes / agenda forced to the Games.

Roahin: Hard to say. Most of the people who enjoy the Enhanced Edition didn't really play the originals much, if at all, and so didn't feel as betrayed or disappointed by the missteps that Beamdog made. You, as a fresh viewer will ultimately be more inclined to like it because you don't have a frame of reference to understand what about the game makes it bad.
Though, i could revert this Argument and say, in my Experience many Classic Fans often tend to be too biased and nostalgic about their Games(and don't get me wrong, myself included... i have for some games the same issue, at other games i'm however pretty open), that they can't be neutral and aren't able to judge an EE / Remastered / Remake objectively, and can't tell what this makes better / good compared to the Classic Game. If you are used to something you are also used to the flaws and even begin to like it for the flaws, so you will dislike any kind of change, even if it fix or better said flaws. Modding in comparison to an EE / whatever helps, due you can give the classic player themself the control over what they want to change...

However yes, i guess i will have it easier due my first playthrough was long ago and i don't remember much of it anymore(i'm not sure if i even finished it fully)...

The only thing really bad about EE is the additions to the story, characters and their little probelms. Badly written, abominable voice actors. THe UI and zoom possibility, and the ability to see so much more on your character screen are all ok in my book.

You needn't worry about political correctness or agenda being forced on you in the EE games. I've played through both games as well as SoD and there's barely any mention of it. The most you'll probably notice as a new character is a somewhat drastic shift in a particular character's personality between BG1 and SoD, although given that the NPCs in BG1 were pretty threadbare to begin with, it's entirely plausible that it was something there from the start and just not given much attention to.

And you'd be 100% correct in your summation. I have no idea if I'd have liked the Enhanced Edition if I'd never played the original because I am blinded by my experience and opinions for the original that have been ingrained in the twenty years since they released. So you're right to take any negative feedback with a grain of salt.
Well there's three versions to consider, really.

1) For Baldur's Gate 1, there's the original version. It's the purist way and plays the way it should. It does however have some very archaic UI design choices that makes it rather tedious to play. Things like no way to highlight usable objects, quick spells are basically useless, game doesn't pause in menus. Plus the widescreen mods for it have various issues.

2) For Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 you can play both of them in the original engine. For Baldur's Gate 1 this is done through a mod called BG1Tutu. This has been the community recommended way of playing the first game for a long while, but as anyone who's played the original will tell you: the gameplay is very different. That said the UI doesn't have any major flaws of the first.

3) For Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 we finally have the Enhanced Editions. They are both basically built on 2), meaning Baldur's Gate 1 feels like it runs in the Baldur's Gate 2 engine. Due to poor scaling choices and UI design, they both look worse visually, but major improvements have been made in UI functionality meaning they play better. Some new NPCs are added, but they are easily skippable (and should be skipped). A lot of people say they're more buggy, but I haven't found that to line up with reality and sort of suspect deliberate lies from people who are on a weird political crusade against Beamdog.

You are forgetting another, very important, way of playing the games that exists both for the originals and the EE: BG Trilogy.

That's really just a variant of BG1Tutu/EE. Same considerations apply.

Think about what you wrote for a moment. Why would there be a Trilogy version for EE (EET) if what you say was true? The considerations you wrote (basically change of rules and UI) apply, of course. But there are more, and they are not minor:

Leveling - there are no "per-chapter" or other partial caps but only one cap from Candlekeep to the Pocket Plane and beyond. It even has been addressed by tweak mods, nerfing the XP rewards in different situations.

Continuity - Experience and stats of the PC and NPCs are transitioned into the BG2 portion. And adding other mods, you can even decide what happens with all the NPCs and the equipment present at the end of the BG1/TotSC portion of the game (differing from the canon story line if you wish so).

Updated - BGT/EET are being worked on to this day, while BG1Tutu/EasyTutu, as problem-free as they may be, have not been worked on for (I believe) 5 years or more.

Mods - All mods installed that apply to the mechanics, enemies and equipment will apply to the BG1 portion as well, even if no equivalent standalone mod exists for the original BG1. Most of those are, of course, also available for Tutu (or at least EasyTutu), but you must decide if you are willing to endure the changes in both portions of the game before installing one.

And last, but not least, for the ones that own the original games, the most complete way of installing mods and mega-mods, ensuring their inter-compatibility, is the Big World Project install order, which uses BGT. Meanwhile, I would not risk installing Tutu with more than the 2 or 3 mayor tweak and fix mods, at best.

I'm not saying the Trilogy mods don't offer anything, but they do not significantly alter the feel of the games. I consider them much less important than the difference between BG1/BG1Tutu/BG1EE.
