Win7 64 bit. The game crashes when talking to the guards at beginning of the game. The first two guards AND the other two by the pool. So I can't proceed. I can talk to the other characters at the area with no problems.

same for me also with windows 7 64bit
Have exactly the same problem
After a billion tries I got past them. I didn't do anything. It just randomly didn't crash.
Now I'm in the cave in the second island and I once again have to interact with a guard. Crash again. The game seems to have a problem with the guards. Really weird problem...
I found a way. Try disableing all the visual and desktop compositions, and run game in 640x480 mode. It worked on my computer. Tried it three times nad no crush.
Did not work :(

See if this works when you reach the caves in the second island.
same situation:(
don't know. when I posted it, it worked on the guards at the begining (the ones up, and down the stairs) but later on when I tried to speak with other guards it crushed again. Sorry for misinformation.

But still it worked on the first two pairs of guards in my case, cause I tried to pass them few more times on diferent profiles, and still works.

But judgying from the error message it has to be something in dealing with "guards" model.

What error messsage? I just get a freeze and music loop. Then I have to ctrl-alt-del and terminate the process. Could you post the message? Maybe it will help gog identify the problem.
I have the same problem when talking to the first guards... hopefully someone will have a solution soon.
I have exactly the same as the others:-

Windows 7, 64 bit; Program freeze with music loop at first guards.
Yes same happens to me. I approach guard, any of them, and computer hangs. Have to terminate the application manually. Tried all kinds of things. Also sent message to GOG. They should have an answer for us. It seems that CRYO is no longer in business. Maybe we will never get this problem resolved.

It work for me too. Thanks!
Same problem for me... thanks for the tip.

Seriously, i'm a good customer of GOG but they are pissing me off sometimes. This case is a perfect example of why. I just can't believe they weren't aware of this crash problem while releasing the game. I have bought about twenty games and i think this is a cool service for PC gamers, but, there are minor or major issues on easily half of the games i own.

I really think it's just abnormal that GOG sells 10 or 15 years-old games who crash/lag/freeze because of mediocre adaptation work. GOG is probably making indecent money on re-publishing existing titles made by other people. The less that they can do is to ENSURE PERFECTLY that the games they sell work fine.

Really, it's been boring me.
I tried that. It worked on first guard, but when I tried to talk again music kept repeating and the system hung. Tried all combinations of settings......Still trying to download again, but no success after 3 times
