Hi, this game is doomed.
Now that the new installer was fixed, the game freezes at the beginning when talking to guards. The solution of the new exe suggested by gog tem does not work for me. I have tried both on 64 bit windows 7 and a 32 bit w7, same problem.
Strangely, the last post is dated august 30...I am I the only one left with this problem?

I solved that freeze at my end (on Win7 64) by changig the compaytibility settings on the shortcut from Win98 to Win XPSP2. At least one more user reported this also worked for him. Have you tried it ?
I have uninstalled the game. I will reinstall it and try your troubleshooting method. I'll let you know if it worked.

No way. I have just tried and the first question to the first guard led to a freezing...
I have contacted GOG but I I think they would have solved the problem if they knew how by now...

Ok, good luck ;)

I'm not using the alternate .exe btw, the comaptibilty workaround worked for me with the regular .exe that comes with the installer.

Edit: Oh, it didn't work then, bummer

Thanks anyway, Namur.

To be more precise, with the modified exe, if I don't speak with the first two guards, the game "seem" to work smoothly. I talked with the queen, then when I returned to the palace's yard, I tried to speak with the guard which is at the opposite side of the stairs, and as soon as I clicked on his face....freeze!!! Probably it is a problem regarding some action which are not necessary for finishing the game, but it is however a very big issue that makes me think that GOG are not too professional...Have you tried to speak to the guard in fornt of the door at the opposite side of the yard once you come down from the queen's room?

Well, i started a new game just now. I talked to all the guards around before and after going into the companions' chambers and everything works. There's a small delay after clicking on someone to initiate the dialogue, but that's not unusual with older point&click games, so at my end the game seems to be working correctly. I'm sorry my 'fix' doesn't work for you.

so was there actually a official fix for this ? sorry to bump it up but the corrupt gods of Atlantis made me do it .
Just finished the game.
I had the same problem, the game freezes on conversations randomly.
Sometimes I was able to push the game forward by stealing the focus from it for a moment.
I hope this helps identify the root of the problem.
iv bought the game too and its randomly crashes..tried all compatibility modes and exe provided by GOG but no luck....any update for those problems yet?
First post here; I've logged a ticket with support (or tried to) but thought I'd mention here as well. The game's crashing as described on my system too, both normally and with the alternate .exe. I'm running Windows 7 x64, CPU is Intel i5-2400. I've also tried playing with compatibility modes, and I can see the affinity's already set to one core so I left it alone.

My backup option is to try and install it on the virtual XP that comes with Windows 7, but it would be really cool if we could fix this.
Hi,

I have contacted support for this big problem time ago but they could not help at all. I discovered a strange thing, though, if you open a google chrome window and let it open in background, then start the game, it runs perfectly and smoothly. I don't know if this happens only with my pc and support team were not able to explain this. May be there is too much free memory in our modern computers for such an old game?... It is a poor solution, I know, but if one desperately wants to play this game it could be worth trying...Good luck

It's your PC. I have chrome running (this thread in fact), and I'm getting all the freezes.
just wondering, any new updates ? just bought this thinking how nostalgic I'd feel but I'm starting to hate that guards face... ( I tried all the help mentioned in this thread )
I bought this game with this weekend's sale, and am discovering this crashing problem myself, just now. I'm really surprised to see that the complaints have been rolling in about this title for over a year now, and GOG has yet to fix the problem. Hopefully the sale will draw more attention to the issue, but I would really prefer it if the games I buy here were playable in the first place. Sorry if I'm sounding bitter, but these blasted palace guards have frozen my game over ten times now! No complaints about anything else I've downloaded, at least, not yet.

Update: I downloaded the executable, which worked at first, but now it comes down to the same problem: the game crashes when I talk to the guards. I really hope this can be fixed, and SOON!

A little update: I shifted to Windows 8 64 bit recently (the pc is just the same ) and tried to reinstall the freezing Atlantis game just for curiosity. It runs perfectly until now, and I am already past the Carbonek part. I know this is not a solution at all but in case someone is already planning to upgrade... The incompatibility seems to be related to W7 I fear...
