I'm sorry it took so long. I think we've narrowed down the problem to quad-core processors on Windows 7 64-bit. This might also apply to processors with over 4 cores, hyperthreaded cores etc.

Right now I can suggest a workaround that will make the game run correctly, however the workaround itself is a bit inconvenient - you have to disable all but one core in the operating system. This requires a restart.

To do this:
- click Start,
- type in msconfig and press Enter,
- go to Boot -> Advanced options...,
- check the "number of processors" option,
- select 1 processor,
- press OK,
- press OK again,
- restart your computer.
when you no longer need this setting, do this again but just un-check the "number of processors" option, to re-enable all cores.

We'll do our best to implement a more user-friendly solution that will make the game work right out of the box in quad-core systems running W7 64-bit. Unfortunately just setting affinity to one core (which we do by default) doesn't help here. I'll post in this thread once we have a permanent solution.
good at last someone at gog notices, hope there is a better solution soon

Wouldn't simply setting the processor affinity for the executable to a single core accomplish the same thing without going through all this trouble?

you mean like pressing the ctrl alt del and setting the processor affinity ? the game is pretty picky might crash as soon as alt tabbed out, but its a better solution if it worked :D

That's one way to do it, but if setting the affinity does fix the problem, they could simply modify the game's shortcut to automatically set the affinity at launch.

that's cool, can you post what the shortcut should be modified to set affinity, maybe if someone who owns the game checks in here, they could try it out ?
Shouldn't this work by just setting the core affinity of the program to just 1 after starting it, without needing to cripple your pc?

Plenty of info on how to do it here: http://www.vistax64.com/gaming/197915-setting-processor-affinity-made-easy.html

awesome in short, the fix could be that
1) right click the shortcut
2) click on properties
3) make the changes to target based on this example
The target line originally looks like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Tomb Raider - Legend\trl.exe"
So change it to this:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C START "Tomb Raider" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tomb Raider - Legend\trl.exe"
[if anyone who knows what the target for the gog shortcut is post it, i could convert the example for the gog game directly]
4) click on ok and run the game
hope those who had problems with the game, try this one out and see if it works

Sweeler: I have the same problem, newly installed Win 7 SP1 64bit.

I don't think that it's really ok for GOG to re-release a game and claiming it to work under WIn 7 when it infact doesn't. If they doesn't fix this there should be refunds going out.

DimitrisStr: Win7 64 bit. The game crashes when talking to the guards at beginning of the game. The first two guards AND the other two by the pool. So I can't proceed. I can talk to the other characters at the area with no problems.

Kwasiu6500: Have exactly the same problem
try the above method and see if it works out :)

Nope, you need to add the whole "cmd.exe" portion to the shortcut as well and the "/high" part might not be necessary at all. Essentially you would be running the game via the command prompt, instead of directly from the executable.

I opened the thread a good while ago, before you had posted anything, and answered after you had :P

oh right made the changes, now will it work?

It might, I don't really know for sure, I don't have the game to test with. It has worked for me in the past with other games I have needed to set affinity on though.

lol i hope someone does try it out :D i get this feeling that people who bought this spooked out at its complexity :D
Unfortunately, single-core affinity was set by default and the problem persists regardless. The problem goes a bit deeper, but we seem to be getting good results with a new executable.

Try using this executable (it's for the English version only):
