Pretty good for a shooter. Reminds me of Doom but with a medeval setting mixed in with some Hexen elements with no ongoing story.. But what makes it unique is the rougelike aspect with procedural levels, perma death, and tons of unlockables. A really fun game.
I have been going back and forth for a while about buying this game. I would have it on my wishlist for a while, then I would take it back off. Put it back on , and take it back off. I finally decided to give this game a chance. I was very happy with my purchase. I have only played on normal difficulty so far and have been challenged so far. I have only been able to make it to the 3rd dungeon.
Like most FPS it is very repetitive. I would compare this game to the Pain Killer series, or Serious same. You go through different parts of a dungeon, find a "key" or a scroll to summon the boss. Then you go through a portal where you summond the boss. You have one life each play through. If you die, you lose all your upgrades, and start back at the first dungeon.
You start off being able to chose between two characters, but are able to unlock characters as you complete other objectives (e.g. kill 40 skeletons and you unlock a character). You also over time will unlock other upgrades and perks throughout your time playing through the dungeons. The dungeons are different through each playthrough, so it gives a lot of replay value. Some rooms will have blessings or curses on you or the enemy, and sometimes affect both.
Overall, this game actually has a lot to offer as a FPS and I would highly recommend. The magical weapons are a nice twist to your classic shooter.
Suffers from a number of problems, including stuttering mentioned by others (even on high end machines). The graphics are bland, there is no system to educate players on how to play, playing, dying and learning through trial and error is "a game mechanic." All attacks are shotgun shots, spray and pray is the attack method, precision is impossible and attacks drift aimlessly. Worse, the enemy attacks are homing. The game play is not "do a good job, do a better job," it's instead "fail horribly repeatedly until you unlock something that allows you to fail less horribly, grind, rinse, repeat until you finally unlock what you need to defeat the game." This is not an enjoyable game mechanic for me. Throughout, you see the same set of monsters in an endless parade of reptition. "Lore" in game consists of some badly written (almost not english) sentences and occasional developer comments about other games they've developed. (Including the underwhelming advertisement that their first game was a mobile game that was "feature complete" but "because" of that game they "never released another mobile game.")
Ubuntu Mate 18.04 - Plays awesomely on all of my rigs from my main machine to my HTPC to my gaming laptop. This is an excellent rouge-like FPS that has a STEEP skill curve once you defeat the 3rd boss. I love it!
I've finished easy mode 4 times by now with different characters but it has gotten old by now.
There's no reason for trying medium difficulty since I'd probably never see new stuff this way.
It's a fun game to shut your brains off for a while, although naturally it's extremely repetitive.
To me, it's just "The Binding of Isaac" in first person perspective with Heretics design and several difficulty modes.
The usual random rooms, arena fighting, boss fights, gathering ammo, rinse and repeat.
I'd say it's worth a few bucks for the nice time I had, but there is a bloody lot of wasted potential in this game for sure and I wish they'd have made it with classical FPS level design instead of rogue like arena mechanics, but I guess I'll have to play the old ID titles for this with the DoomsdayEngine.
