In the spirit of the original Heretic

Ziggurat was clearly designed by someone who was as in love with Heretic as I was back in the day. The weapon designs and purposes and even some of the weapon names are nearly identical. Even some of the mobs are eerily similar in design. It's all much nicer looking than Heretic, because graphics have advanced a lot since then. But whereas Heretic had a tactical solution to every level, Ziggurat is a balls-to-the-wall shoot-em-up. Keep running, keep grabbing powerups, keep spraying your many, many opponents while you try to dodge their attacks. There is a pseudo-RPG leveling system at work here that is kind of compelling, allowing you to fine tune your character to cover its weaknesses. But like Legend of Grimrock, it's a very old-school game without much brain despite the modern looks, and the "randomly generated" maps reuse the same tiles and components so frequently that you might get lost just on one level if you pull two nearly identical rooms. Mindless fun, but after you get the rhythm down you might get bored with it quickly.

You might wanna avoid this one

I'm not really sure how to put this diplomatically ... OK, sorry, but, this game is just terrible. If you find the original, old, legacy iD Software DOOM! too complex and cerebral for you, this just might be your game. But other than that ... there's no plot, no storyline, it's just mindless explore-and-kill-things with no real goal or objective except to live as long as possible, and not even the thin excuse of a competitive "deathmatch" mode. I gave it about an hour or so of trial, and that's it, I'm done. It has no engagement or depth whatsoever and essentially no redeeming qualities. It's not even a good "magic FPS" because all of the weapons are so inaccurate (so much dispersion) that you can hardly hit anything beyond point-blank range, except using the alt-fire modes that chew through your four different kinds of mana like it was going out of style. About the one good thing I have to say for it is that, given away free, it was worth the price. Make of that what you will.

Challenging game but unplayable settings

No support for borderless windowed mode. No support for custom mouse sensitivities. The provided options are all too high except for one which is WAY too low.
