A classic

This is one of my favourite games, as I've kept coming back to it over the last 20 years since I first played it in high school. Personally, I greatly enjoy the pausable real-time tactical combat, allowing me to stop the action and plan my next move when a previously hidden enemy is suddenly revealed, or even teleport out of the way (once you've discovered it). On the other hand, you can also play in turn-based mode, similar to the original XCOM, if that's your style. The vehicle-based combat above the city adds a new element as well, giving you the choice of cautious sniping or a full assault with explosive ordnance -- at the risk of wasting all your budget paying for repairs after you level a city block. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in this style of game. And even if you're not sure -- wait til it's on sale and spend a few bucks to give it a try.

true xcom

I remember when i 1st played the demo, the graphic was amazing and the game-play too. But then I bought a retail boxed version..in the box was a huge book and I was wondering what the hell is this good for, but then I realize what for. The game was so complex at it release. And my English was pretty bad at that time...The localized Book was a "Holy Bible of X-com" for me and my friends. Factions, Aliens, be careful where you shoot. If you destroy a building... BOOM pay or, you got new enemy even the police... Screwup a defense of a local company ... BOOM your staff wont be able to travel via taxi as the company is now your enemy...same with engine company... you won't be able to buy some parts, guns, gear and so on..

3rd part of Xcom

It is easier than Enemy Unknown (not to mention TFTD), but still very good member of the Xcom family :) One of its best features is real-time option for tactical missions (with active pause -it works great). All the rest is more or less the same - shot down UFOs, combat aliens, save civilians, and research alien technologies. And base management - hire scientist, hire soldiers, buy weapon, build better weapon (or crafts) -all classica Xcom. And of course ( i love this in Xcoms ) - if you want your soldiers enter a building via the wall (instead of the doors) -it is only matter of firepower :)

Highly recommended

I actually like this X-Com the most. Even though it does not bring anything revolutionary to the series and has a closer focus (one city instead of whole globe). As for the main tactical / strategy layer it is quite rich and interesting, I'd say a small step forward from previous games. As for the close focus - it allows for a lot of fun twists. You have the city constantly on the screen and as the aliens try to first subvert and later destroy it the drama plays out right in front. UFO chase that goes bad and leads to collateral damage is not a line of text, but your vehicles actually fire in some building, owned by a faction which will weaken the faction and also make it more hostile to X-Com. If you suspect some faction of having contacts with aliens you can just send a team to their buildings and investigate pro actively and if this is done in time you may stop co-opt attempt. You can also write some faction off and just start raiding them for money. All in all, well worth playing at least once.

Still a great game after all these years

I've played this when it came out first time ... at the time I used (I think) a 486-DX 100mhz :-) After many years I have had cravings to play this again so I bought an original CD out of ebay, maybe 4 or 5 years ago, but could never make it work on my Mac... until I finally found that some had success with the GOG version and sure enough, it does work on my Macbook + DOSBox 0.74... the catch was that it had to be installed first on a Windows machine (Win10) and then I copied over the entire thing to my dosgames directory on my Mac. I just modifed the screen size to 1024x768 and had to make the mouse captive. Works flawlessly, or better, with the original flaws - but honestly I have not found any. The only two "issues" I have is with mouse operation of the game itself: 1) I wish they had put a "center on base" hotkey: workaround - use the 2D map view and mouse right-button click 2) A slider to adjust the screen rolling speed : no workaround so I go back to the 2D screen. Now, one thing that always bothered was the aliens concept... they don't look nothing like any inteligent alien capable of building (growing) anything capable of interdimensional travel, so after some time it just becomes a point and kill... still enjoyable so, I'm enjoying.
