BEWARE THE CORAL!

Windbound does some interesting things. I dig the sailing, but it seriously gets in its own way in an attempt to be "realistic", I guess? There's times you can't get to the next island you definitely need to get to because the wind is blowing *hard* the opposite direction. This mechanic factors heavily in why I rage quit and uninstalled Windbound. That, and the coral. I'd gotten to the second chapter. Still had the boat I'd upgraded during the first chapter. After struggling with the wind to loop around the island I'd just left in order to get enough momentum to head to the next island, I *grazed* a chunk of coral, and the boat kept taking damage after I got clear of the coral-- which I did *immediately*. It popped, and I landed in the middle of the ocean with none of the resources I put into the boat or had stored on the boat. All Coral is One Coral. The One Coral is here to destroy you. Beware the Coral!

Major flaws in game design

Now that the developper finally pushed an update to prevent the game from crashing, I was finally able to complete the the game. There's things this game is doing fine: it's beautiful, artsy, it plays smoothly, the sailing is very good. However, it is impossible to overlook the way the game is poorly designed, as if concepts were randomly laid out and stiched together to produce something around an engaging shell. For example, the choice of the designer to go for rogue-lite elements like permadeath. This works when you can achieve runs in around one or two hours at most, eventually allowing the player to skip levels as it progresses throught the game. A run in Windbound can last several hours or more, depending on what you want to achieve. Under these circumstances, making the player lose everything it crafted or collected is unbearable. Again, combat against bigger foes becomes heavily punishing and way too risky for the reward. As it stands, the developper needs to engage in a deep redesign of the game fundamentals before it can be deemed recommendable.

Controls are a killer

Although I love the concept of open world gaming, this game got me lose my patience within a few hours. The graphics are more than OK. They gave me slightly that BOTW feeling what I love in this kind of openworld games. The possibility to create items, loot corpses and other things in the environment is great and gives the hoarder in me a satisfying feeling. The major issue with this game is the fact that the controls are a massive pain in the rear. There is no way to remap those, and as a lefthanded gamer, I dislike the fact Iḿ forced to use the classic AWSD for movement, and the way you move in the game doesn´t feel very natural. Another reason to quit this game early is the fact you constantly need to look for food to regain stamina. Gaining enough food to stock up isn´t as easy as I hoped on the lower difficulty level of this game. Eventually these two things got me to quit the game early after a couple of hours. Bummer, as the concept of the game was quite promising.

Best Moana Rip Off Ever

This game looks like it was being made to be the official Moana game but never got the license so they just redrew the protag and got the pianist from Goose Game to do the score

An amazing adventure.

I love how the 'survival' is condensed into a rather voracious hunger. (Hungry Hungry Kara) I've had a few starvation close calls, but that's one thing that kept me hooked on playing - borderline starving when reaching an island, and then leaving said island with a full belly and a half dozen Flame Roasted Fish. (after slinging hammer crushed rocks at respawning Shoreskippers) My first death in the game showed me what the character keeps (Sea Shards + Blessings) so it was easy to play toward hauling those in, for better Blessings so that all the stages could be completed. (seems like some reviews of this game judge it more for platforming than understanding the roll that replaying stages has - roguelite/like elements and procedurally generated worlds) Very few games keep my attention after beating them, and this is one of them. (Stage 5 is the last stage for the story, and I'm currently on my way to Stage 10 of the endless mode) The game is really fun. Really happy to discover this one.
