Just not really good
I have this on the Nintendo Switch and I'll just be honest and say that this game really isn't that interesting at all. Frustrating gameplay isn't what I ever signed up for.

Good survival with possible flaws
As a caveat I caveat I haven't played for weeks as I don't have a lot of time, I'd also describe myself as a competent yet casual player. The artstyle and survival aspect of Windbound is very good to me. Each piece from the islands to the fauna and flora to the main character is beautiful yet simple. The survival is pretty much what you'd expect and if you enjoy survival games then you will like this part of it. However there were two things that made me stop as I found them to limit my enjoyment. Firstly combat is a bit off. In a game where if you die you respawn without your boat and most of your inventory the combat should be tight. Quite a few times I found myself either in a knocked down pain loop where I couldn't get up quick enough or hitting a creature smack bang in the middle of it's torso and it didn't register. Second is that sailing is just irritating. It is trying to be as realistic as possible and you have to adjust your mast to factor the wind direction. While this sounds fun in practice, especially when 70+% of the time the wind is heading straight toward you, it makes the main premise of the game a chore. Zig-zagging at a crawl, looking up real life sailing guides and fighting with the controls just to get to another island is not a fun game for me personally. In my opinion they should have included the wind direction to help give you a boost but still allow easy forward travel no matter what as zig-zagging forever is not what you'd expect when playing a sailing videogame. These two issues killed my excitement for the game even after a bit of playtime. Will I play again? Possibly but I doubt I can bypass the problems. Maybe the sailing won't bother you but I would suggest looking up gameplay videos from a new player to get an idea as I didn't.

Amazing atmosphere, I still love it
This game has quite simple mechanics. Where it truly shines is the atmosphere. Spend time exploring, perfecting your hunting skills, exploring, learning how to sail and getting the absolute best tan (joke). Somehow this has struck a deep cord somewhere in me - visually, aesthetically, even through the story - which isn't really so deep. The sense of absolute freedom, learning the ways to survive, I am astonished this only has so few stars. Definitely would recommend. Especially when you enjoy your alone time.

Really bad
The game itself offers story, sailing, exploration, boat crafting with some combat and female protagonist. That's 10/10, right? Well sailing sucks, the wind physics not working, immortal shark always kick you out of the boat. Exploration is all about searching big empty spaces for generic islands. Crafting well, I am afraid that you end up like the rest with something like trimaran to accommodate all three bonuses and crafting options. No upgrades though, so you have to disassemble parts and craft from scratch. Combat is a real piece of work, frustrating to put it mildly, unless you use an OP sling weapon with firebomb, which is not usable for stage end boss fights, where is no place to hide. Every big mob has its own song, what's funny, perhaps it was meant for a different audience. The other remarks, diving, not worth, some bonuses acquired on each stage can ease your pain a little. Food consumption of the protagonist that is a pain of his own.

I did have fun with it
The graphics are nice, and gameplay wasn't bad. I didn't experience any bugs that I'm aware of, however, I've only played the first chapter. My one complaint is the hunger meter falls just a little too fast. By the time a piece of meat has finished cooking I've lost another chunk of health. Animals (food) don't respawn unless you die. I think the berries do respawn, or they seemed to, but don't really give much health or hunger relief. I felt like I wasn't able to explore or take any time to do anything other than rush to the next island. The timed mechanics could stand a little tuning. I did have fun, and I'm sure my character will either get stronger or get better weapons as I progress. I don't think it deserves such harsh reviews. I didn't find bugs, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Keybinding could be useful for some who need to customize their layout. It has a lot of potential, in my opinion. It would, however, benefit from some patching and polish.
