Following the critically acclaimed 2014 Game of the Year winner Wasteland 2, the RPG series that pioneered the post-apocalyptic genre in video games returns with Wasteland 3.

In Wasteland 3 you take command of a squad of Desert Rangers, lawmen and women in a post-nuclear world, trying to rebuild society from the ashes. More than a century after the bombs fell, you’re fighting a losing battle to keep your beloved Arizona alive. Then the self-proclaimed Patriarch of Colorado radios, promising aid if you'll do a job he can only entrust to an outsider—rescue his land from the ambitions of his three bloodthirsty children.

You’re dispatched on a desperate quest from the scorching deserts to the snowy mountains to start from scratch, building a new base, finding a snow-worthy vehicle, training new recruits, and fighting your way through hostile frozen wastes. All the while, you'll have to decide who to trust in this land torn apart by corruption, intrigue, warring factions, crazed cultists, cutthroat gangs, and bitter sibling rivalries. Build a reputation for yourself by making decisions that will profoundly impact Colorado, its inhabitants and the story you experience. Will you be Colorado’s savior or its worst nightmare?

Wasteland 3 is a squad-based RPG from inXile entertainment, featuring challenging tactical turn-based combat and a deep, reactive story full of twists, turns, and brutal ethical decisions that will keep you hooked whether you’re a Wasteland veteran or new to the series. Create a squad of up to six Rangers and customize them with perks and abilities geared to your playstyle. You even get your own battle truck, which you can upgrade into a hardened war beast, bristling with weapons, to help mow down your enemies.

more about squad combat and less an RPG

I liked WL2 better I think. The biggest thing that strikes me about this game is just how much more combat there is compared to how little else there is about it :( All I feel like I do is move a little bit on a given map then fight... move a little more, then fight and so on. There are conversations here and there but most of them don't feel like important either It's a great engine and I haven't run into any bugs, but it seems like almost all I do is the squad combat and the combat is a step backwards from what it was in WL2 a In 3 it's literally broken up between your team's turn and enemies turn rather than intermixing of individuals' turns I feel like each map is just too small and there just to to host a series of squad fights Choices don't matter all that much either and the overall flow of the game is really linear too I don't know... maybe you could fight the different children in a different order but the game seems mostly to give you everything on rails overall I feel like this was a wasted pre-purchase or whatever that whole effort was of buying it before they really started development and I probably won't order the next wasteland game until I see how much of an RPG it is if it even is one so really to sum it up: if you want an RPG skip this if you want a lot of turn based squad combat with guns (mostly) then this is your game

Less than the sum of its parts

They've got the formula down pat now, so much so that it shows. Playing Wasteland 3 doesn't feel like an immersive RPG experience so much as a connect-the-dots exercise in cranking out the expected tropes of any CRPG. All the usual contrived moral quandaries are here, moreso as an excuse to get you to play the game twice (gotta try it once as a good guy and then again as a bad guy, right?) than a real effort to explore the themes the story introduces but then does little or nothing with. Wasteland 3 feels small for some reason. The story is so contained, squeezed into such a tiny area, that it feels more like a comic book than an epic novel. Once you've explored Colorado, you'll find yourself looking at the map and thinking... huh, that's the whole game? It's tiny compared to the previous two games in the series. No new NPCs of note are added - the only ones of any interest have been carried over from Wasteland 2. The plot itself is only surprising in that it offers no surprises of any sort. At the outset, you're given a quest to capture three bad guys, and you proceed to do precisely that. You find yourself waiting for the plot twist that never comes. On the technical side, Inexile's QC department obviously phoned this one in. You'll find broken quests and dialogue trees galore. Combat is especially frustrating as characters routinely shoot through walls and terrible AI makes your allies much more of a hindrance than a boon as they block your characters and inflict friendly-fire damage on your team over and over again. The game mechanics themselves work against the story, as recruitable NPCs later in the game can't really be used because their skills won't complement the team you've developed. There are some good ingredients here. If they introduced a mid-game twist that doubled the game's size and addressed the bugs, this could be an A+ CRPG. As it stands, I'd give it a pass.

It's okay.

Compared to its predecessor Wasteland 3 seems to have taken several steps back. It looks good, the soundtrack is frankly amazing, but the gameplay feels more shallow than in WL2. I guess it's "streamlined for a young, modern audience" like most RPG franchises that get dumbed down with every release. Combat feels simplified, and while the idea of building up your Ranger base sounds cool in practice it really doesn't add anything. Moving around the world map is tedious, you need to hold down the mouse button where you want to go or you stop moving and the camera is zoomed in way too far, presumably to make the map look bigger than it is. The setting seems to have dialed up the wackyness to 11 and many factions and quests feel like they belong in a modern Fallout game (that is absolutely not a compliment). The writing really doesn't help, oftentimes being so juvenile I felt several decades older than the game's apparent intended audience. In an RPG where writing is such an important (if not the most important) part of the whole experience that's a problem. It's also buggy with scripted events sometimes failing to trigger resulting in broken quest lines, and I have to mute the audio whenever I'm looking at a map because whenever you hover over a point of interest there will be an audio cue when it's highlighted but the sound itself seems broken somehow, sounds like digital clipping which is incredibly grating at any volume. Supposedly that can be fixed by *lowering* the sample rate of your audio device but frankly any situation where the user needs to fiddle with hardware settings before starting up a game just so it doesn't shit the bed is unacceptable; this isn't the early 90s. Overall I'd say play WL2 instead and check out WL3's OST on youtube. If you really want more Wasteland pick it up on a discount; this game clearly didn't receive the time or attention it required in development so there's no reason the devs and publisher should receive full payment.

RPG for the masses

I backed this game on FIG as I really like the old Bards tale series and I also backed Bard's Tale IV and I really what to support Inxile and Brian Fargo. I have only played 1 hour of Wasteland 1 and therefore this game it totally new for me, I read the story and it is really good in my opinion. Early playing ratings: The Intro is great and you feel you are there and want to yell out. Character creation (look) when picking/creating your own characters is ok, The good is you get an option to pick and customise your character. The Bad you cannot pick the exact color you want and you cannot upload your own picture. (3/5) Character creation (build) When coming to the build everything is great, the way you can make your own and also have traits that give minus in something and plus in another like in other games like this is great(even that I did not pick any). (5/5) Grafik The graphic is not an important part of a game like this but the intro is awesome, it is like seeing Blizzards game they always polish a great intro nad this feels the same way. The ingame graphic is good nice animations but still standard. (4/5) Gameplay I really like the fights but I miss a little exploration as this is not open world where you can move where ever you like. But I cannot say a 100% score not even 50% before I have played a lot more of this game. Sound I really like the sound effects and the admosfear of the music, but the voice interactions are like the are waiting for something. Maybe it is a correction they need to make so it is more smooth like in the video sequence (4/5) All in all a really good game some hours in.

Ok game with major flaws

I finished the game today after playing it for a few days. Overall it is an ok game, borderline on "bad". The story was good, the choice of music was good, the gameplay was ok. There are many issues with it, however, which should not be in such expensive game. - The quests can become broken, I had this happen after spending few hours on a quest and did not want to restore the save because of the time I spent doing it. - The companion pets can become permanently lost. I did not have this happen but I have read where other people complained about it. Also, some people managed to get several pets at the same time but I could only manage to get one active pet. - The loading times are extremely slow for every new level, this can become extremely annoying very fast when you will have to often switch different areas. The loading times do not depend on your hardware performance, I have the game installed on Samsung 970 EVO drive with 16GB of RAM and Intel i7-10875H CPU and the loading of new area still take about a minute or slightly less. This is inexcusable for a modern game, especially seeing that newer generation of gaming consoles will have very fast SSDs. - The game controls can randomly move your view all the way to the left edge of the area you are currently at, this is also pretty annoying. - The co-op multiplayer currently does not work. - The choices you are given at the end of the game are pretty disappointed, I don't want to put spoilers here but some behavior by some of your allies does not make sense and you do not have an option to change their behavior in any way. - The amount of content is pretty small for such expensive game, I finished it with about 24 hours of gameplay and this would be faster if the loading times were not so slow. Overall this is an ok game but I highly suggest anyone to wait for few major patches and the price decrease because the current price is way too high for such short game filled with so many bugs.
