I like it a lot, the setting, the party management, crafting, the story. It's well polished in almost every detail. Not a single crash or bug so far.
Small gripe that i have, is that my GPU (2070 Super) gets super loud, even though the game doesn't look very demanding. DLSS would be helpful (*wink, wink*).
I honestly love playing this game, however there are some serious issues with multiplayer and how shiro is publicicly handling these problems. I played this game with my friend for about 40 hours and made it to the second region before the game completely prevented me from loading into his save.
So we looked online, did our best to make the connection as stable as possible especially since this is the most upvoted problem in this game and the Admin's response on their site is "connot reproduce" and "this game runs peer to peer connection... so [problems] are more than likely on the host/client side" and the given solution is to poke holes in your firewall and antivirus as well as mess with your Network NAT settings. So we tried that and even after Wartales has completely free reign to run on our computers and networks we ended up still being forced to make a second playthrough cause our saves still weren't working. My friend even bought a second version of the game to play on GOG alongside me cause somebody on reddit said that the problems we ran into occured more often across platforms (Steam - GOG for us).
So we play with no issues completing the story quest in the first area and then we try loading in today, and once again the saves are broken.
If you're looking to get this game to play with a friend, find something else to play cause you will only be disapointed when the game inevitably ends up breaking and the saves do not work.
TL;DR
8/10 gameplay
-10/10 Multiplayer experience and Multiplayer bug handling
Wartales is a very good game. It has almost everything that has made Battle Brothers good plus graphics and mini stories for each region.
Your mercs will level up, will have better gear they bought or crafted themselves, they will get better at fighting and at other activities - each of them can have different profession to use in camp or other locations: i.e. minstrell can earn some coin in towns, thief will open locks and steal, miner will gather ore and so on. Most such activities come with their own minigames. All that is fun, and a lot of recipies to unlock mean you will have more fun with them the longer you play.
Battles are good, need planning, positioning, taking in mind synnergies between your mercs and their skills and equipment. You will also need numbers, as even the best fighter will get choped to pieces easily if outnumbered.
You command a company of mercs, so your main activity is fighting. And that means losing your health and damaging your gear. So you need supplies, and you will have to buy them for money you earned on contracts. Some time it will mean that you will take a contract to dispatch a band of deserters and after that you will go back to town to earn your fee and spend most of it on repairs, medicine and replacements, then take on another contract.
Each region has its story, built by your decisions on different occasions. It is nice, but you will have +/- two option on each of story locations. They are fixed, so don't expect a lot of difference if you choose to start your adventure anew.
All in all very good game.
Started playing this because it was recommended after I was playing Battle Brothers.
Outclasses BB in every way. Don't get me wrong, I love Battle Brothers, but this is just plain better.
Really interesting mechanics, great tactical combat, and it's made me very, very curious about what the rest of the game has to offer.
I've near-cleared the first zone, and the second has even more intrigue.
Really gonna enjoy seeing this through.
