While taking a break from playing a tabletop RPG, Daniel, an average guy from modern times, is transported to Harnakon’s Castle. Thinking that he is suffering from a hallucination, he decides that he is going to run the adventure for as long as the illusion lasts. As he explores the castle, fights the monsters within, and even casts potent magical spells, Daniel comes to realize that not everything is as it seems.
Unepic heroically combines open-world platforming gameplay with the intricacy and challenge of the RPG. Tweak Daniel’s skills to your heart’s content. Fight a bewildering variety of monsters, from the lowly goblin to the gigantic dragon, with over 100 different weapons. I started off enjoying the game, but after about 3 hours I was just too pissed off to carry on.
I think that the gameplay is pretty decent, but I do not like the dialogue at all to the point where I just skim through it in case there's something important in it. The writing is about on par with how a teenager or a 20-something would speak (being a 26 year old H.S. science teacher, I can attest to this from personal experience) and many people will probably appreciate the writer's humor, but my belief is that the writer substitutes vulgarity where wit would be more appropriate. With all that being said, the gameplay itself is rather top-notch and makes this a game that is worth buying and playing through.
This game has a retro feel and SOME funny writing. Some of it is juvenile and offensive, but that can be overlooked. The game's influences are pretty much out there as you play - old NES games, PC games, platformers. I myself was having a pretty good time with this game until the focus became on my platforming skills rather than my wits. Having to grab ropes or fall to my death and platforming sections where you have to be precise or die really turned me off to this one since the platforming mechanics are so poorly implemented. I'm fine with a game being challenging - I'm not fine with wrestling the controls as part of that challenge.
If you can overlook the issues I ran into, I still think there's a lot of fun here.
I found this game to be highly entertaining. The criticisms regarding the ham fisted geek references is fair but it doesn't truly impact the game. The references are peppered about but not significantly game impacting. If anything i found them a delightful interruption. The segments of the map are diverse in their theme and the enemy types. Customization and upgrades come often and quickly. Also due the the limitation of character development points you will be inclined to replay the game as a new class so you can explore the tactics inherent in the liabilities you likely won't get the opportunity to realize in your first play through. If you're even remotely interested in a good platformer then I highly suggest this title.
please NOTE: as of this review the version available here on GOG (1.42.3) has a bug making 100% activation of all lights in the castle impossible. Developer forums state that a patch should be available by 5/28/2013. A
No way at all to tell when the game last saved and not obvious way to actually do a save, so it's up in the air when you're safe to quit. The humor is, as another post said, pretty bad. Sorry dev, but it's just plain stupid. : Even the grammar and spelling are hit or miss at a few points, but it's really just a bunch of lame, eye-rolling references and dumb jokes. Too many small games spend time butt-kissing old greats, rather than try to make new ones. In any case, the controls by default are kinda awkward, and can't be customized without quitting from your game in progress. Those few design gripes aside, it seems pretty decent altogether.
