Tyranny - Standard Edition

In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm... even as discord begins to rumble among the ranks of Kyros’ most powerful Archons.

Players will experience the new world order under Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers.
  • Branching, unique stories in an original setting: The battle between good and evil has already taken place, and evil stands victorious
  • Choices matter – make world-altering decisions with far-reaching consequence: As a Fatebinder in the Overlord’s army you wield a vast amount of power in the occupied lands of the Tiers. Will you use that to inspire stability and loyalty, will you be feared, or will you seek your own power?
  • Challenging, classic RPG combat: Tactical real-time-with-pause combat with new party-driven mechanics and modern presentation
  • A rich original setting: Not just another “hero’s journey” -- Tyranny turns the archetypal RPG story on its head and allows players to explore a new take on good and evil

An Excellent Infinity-engine-like RPG

I only played classic infinity engine games more than a decade after their release but I did enjoy them. Tyranny is very much in the style of these classics and I honestly feel like it belongs among them. While Planescape Torment is better as far as making me think -- "the best book I had to play" as the classic quote about it goes -- I would say Tyranny deluxe edition is the overall the best well-rounded game among these. The gameplay is excellent, along with the world and map design. The backstory and lore are exceedingly well planed. While not as fully twisted as Planescape Torment, everything is a bit more complex and layered then it first appears. The play is massively flexible and options for responses to play style abound -- with the exception of Fallout II, more then any other classic-style RPG can you choose to ally, kill, ignore, etc... almost all the major players in this game. Let me address the primary criticisms I am seeing among the reviews as some of them are unfair IMHO. "Abrupt ending" -- yes, this is a fair criticism, it does seem like the game post Act I got a bit rushed, but honestly I thought it was all worth it overall even though it was disappointing not everything got the attention and effort Act I did which was fabulous. "Short" -- I have approaching triple digit hours and am still finding and doing new things with this game, this is not short IMHO. The only games that have kept me busy longer then this tend to have lots of mindless grinding or other "busy" exercises. This is as long as games that are not full of filler and time wasters tend to get IMHO so I am perfectly happy with it length-wise. "Long loading times" -- There is a lot of loading screens, but my experience is the loading tends to be much shorter then the traditional Infinity Engine games that it is based on. These are long only by the standards of no-load games. It is only annoying in places like Leithman's crossing with lots of little house interiors.

Asshole simulator for aspiring leaders

When I played Tyranny for the first time I sensed something, a feeling I've not felt since Polish history lessons from high school......... And, slightly more seriosly, while there is some nostalgia here or there from the golden time of cRPG Tyranny is something different, taking that genre somewhere else, into the realm of grey and gray morality that actually teaches something about how the history is actually shaped...from the prespective of regular people. While I'hve read similar, grimdark stories before it is notable due to its rich story and background lore, challening the Challenger Depth in depth and mount Everes in highs of writing. Five slaves out of five. However, it is not a perfect game in terms of experience, mostly because of the toppest-notch story. Loading of some segments may take eons, enough to let your eagerness to play it die out like dinosaurs, especially when a wonderfully crafter quest requires you to visit 30+ places in an unexcplainable sequence. Battles may be annoying to go through and there is a lot of minor issues here but lore-wise they are good enough. Also, "expansions" are sub-par when it comes to quality. Three and half of a slave out of five. In overall, a great but slightly flawed experience. If you like crpgs and a well cafted stories grab as soon as possible. If not wait for a discount.

Strach that RPG itch quite well!

PRO: - Good to be the bad guy for once in a while! - RTwP fondly remembers me of classics like BG, IWD, PT. - Talent system is great. - Reputation/loyalty/fear/favor/wrath/artifact abilities is quite nice and interesting from a lore/gameplay perspective. - Conquest background is quite interesting (and a great way for a Tyranny 2 being a sequel with importing characters or making a new one with a "conquest" style of "resolving the first game"), and it is a nice touch that in New Game+ they show previous choices you made. CONS: - Stats matter less, mosty of the time increasing 3% to 5% of something. - After some time, if you specced the group well, combat is a breeze in normal difficult setting. - They throw too much items and it is quite boring going each one to see if it is better than current equipment. - Later game you feel ability bloated: Having too much but doesn't using them. - New Game+ done wrong: Enemies autoscale level. Could keep the autoscale, but lessened it so Act I+ felt easier (level -5, perhaps?) and grew from that until in the end enemies could be slightly more powerful than your group.

Tyrannicly good

Tyranny is a very cool evolution of the classical RPG. Where it does quite a few things very right, and one very much not so. Video: A few paragraphs of text can never do a game like this justice and i strongly suggest watching the video on my youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRI5IkQa_Fs Text: Choice is the name of the game, with every action having a reaction down the line. Sometimes these are quite immediate and obvious, and at other times, you'll never notice until you start a new playthrough and a faction goes from hostile to ..not. The choices in the game take the tried and true method of giving you a few options and having you pick from them, and it even has the normal "you cant do this one yet because you aren't at 50 Strength" options. But where the game takes it a few steps further is that the dialogue are impacted by more - your companions with interject with their opinions, the person you're talking you might not WANT to talk to certain characters or might offer completely different dialogue. Coupled with the way the game moves the decision making into the world, with the way you solve puzzles and dungeons as well as how you complete quests also greatly shaping the world. add a healthy reputation system and you've got every knob you turn to make a great roleplay experience. But that's not where it ends, because a RPG needs loot - and loot means combat. and the real time combat, coupled with the tactical pause button to manage it, adds a nice mix away from the usual FPS or Turn based mechanics we're used to with - again - choice being the number one thing: Various characters gain abilities based on reputation that range from buffs, to massive multi-character abilities with a large impact in any fight. Sadly for Tyranny - where it shines in talking and stabbing, the loot you get in combat needs to be equipped, carried and bartered using the inventory system, and here the game does lose some points. The inventory system is way to cumbersome and tedious and has you spend endless minutes deciding if you can use an item on character X or Y and even if you can, if the 0.12 DPS increase is worth it vs the 0.1s recovery penalty... very underwhelming. As with any obsidian RPG you can expect a massive campaign, and unlike many games this isn't a open world experience - the experience is quite targeted and directed, slowly opining up the world to you as you progress through the story. overall, Tyranny does a damn good job of being a solid classic style RPG, and while not perfect - the good outstrips the bad by far.
