Tyranny - Standard Edition

In Tyranny, the grand war between good and evil is over – and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. The Overlord’s merciless armies dominate the face of the world, and its denizens must find their new roles within the war-torn realm... even as discord begins to rumble among the ranks of Kyros’ most powerful Archons.

Players will experience the new world order under Overlord in a reactive role-playing game (RPG), interacting with the populace as a powerful Fatebinder in the Overlord’s forces -- roaming the lands to inspire loyalty or fear as they bring control to the last holdouts of the Tiers.
  • Branching, unique stories in an original setting: The battle between good and evil has already taken place, and evil stands victorious
  • Choices matter – make world-altering decisions with far-reaching consequence: As a Fatebinder in the Overlord’s army you wield a vast amount of power in the occupied lands of the Tiers. Will you use that to inspire stability and loyalty, will you be feared, or will you seek your own power?
  • Challenging, classic RPG combat: Tactical real-time-with-pause combat with new party-driven mechanics and modern presentation
  • A rich original setting: Not just another “hero’s journey” -- Tyranny turns the archetypal RPG story on its head and allows players to explore a new take on good and evil

Silence, Silence...

I really wanted to like this game. As I like the idea and the concept. But sadly, there's absolutely no atmosphere coming with it. The game itself just touch me. So all of its benefits (like replaying it again with other options and stories to tell this way), do not really mean a lot - as I simply don't really feel like doing so. For one, its in the looks, which I could ignore (I admit I'm spoiled here from Witcher 3) if the rest would work. But it doesn't. And that's mostly, because 80% of time, you're reading instead of playing the game - in utter silence. No music. No voice over. If there's one, its not really coherent. One part of a conversation is voiced, the next isn't. Also, for those playing it in any other language than english, that's even worse and those little lines that are still left are in english only. There is very little content on each map, maybe 2, max 3 fights, and yet you constantly keep traveling from place to place which comes with long loading times. The gimmick of time spent on these travels soley matters during the first part of the game, too, Sure, there are some interesting elements and ideas, and the story tries to pull a new trick each time you're about to give up on the game, but honestly, that's not covering this long-term boredom reading all this text. And no, I don't mind reading. Its just the relation. I was a little torn between two and three stars here, but eventually, the current price made it a 2 stars review. I bought it on sale for way less and I still think I overpaid. I rather read a good book instead.

Loved it all along

The music scores and the graphics style are amazing. Add the lore and the dialogs, and bam! immersion is awesome. And some of those cutscenes... some of them feel so good! Particularly your first ###### capture! (auto-censure here to not spoil it for you if you're new to Tyranny). I like the stats system and ability trees, each character has their own possible choices. The magic system is a great and different approach that I had not yet seen in this game genre, very welcome and working very well for me. Great replayability, and several endings as well. (Changes matter all along the game). Just a few things, that are not enough to remove a star, given how well done this game is: - 3D character at creation screen does not look that great but it does not matter since in game the character is very small anyway; - magic system just on the verge on being boring when your character knows them all magic schools and basically you have found the combinations that match your playstyle. Because then, there is no real fun anymore with your wizard. I played Tyranny with all DLC's, and loved it all along. I will replay it with harder difficulty now that I know the mechanics well enough that it has become too easy at normal difficulty level. All in all, you'll love the game for the story, companions and lore. And there is not anything in the game that can wear you down. It's all goodness. Loved it. Love it still. Will do for a long time.

Original and satisfying

A gritty world with mostly outstanding lore and characters with difficult decisions that have consequences for your story. Highly temtped to give 5 stars, but the issue of the DLC being buggy and feeling like filler for half of it's own story dissuaded me from doing that. All-in-all the best cRPG I've played in quite some time. Your decisions are impactful, the characters and setting feel original and interesting. No ham-fisted humor, no reliance on fantasy tropes, almost no idle chatter, and a great spell creation system. Voice acting, artwork, music, environmental storytelling are all top notch. Some conversations with companions could use more voice lines as they sometimes feel cut short, and the companions are interesting in their own right for the most part. The world feels consistent and the reputation system reinforces that. There is replay value and next to no filler in the main story. Progression feels rewarding on all three fronts of combat stats, storytelling, and expanding of your influence and abilities. Sexuality, cursing, and gore exist in the world but feel well used and complimentary rather than as a shock value which is refreshing. Moral ambiguity is ubiquitous and the politics of the world are interesting rather than 'good guys must defeat bad guy'. You are presented with hard decisions and quests very often have more than one way to be resolved. This game manages to make a linear story feel very open and your character actually feels important in the game world rather than all the npcs simply telling you that you are. Allthough you can be a savior, you don't have to be and nobody expects it of you. Choice and nuance are the name of the game. Combat is smooth and the spell creation system is great. How exactly each stat and skill translates into combat is not always clear and using the wiki/google will be neccessary to fully parse how each is weighed. Very well made game that deserves a sequel and a play through for rpg fans

An immersive tale

My first CRPG. I began by reading the Lore guide book (deluxe bonus) and it grabbed my attention and interest. I wanted to see the described world in detail and in-game narration and it delivered. I write this review after finishing my first playthrough. The best point for me was the immersion, after playing for a while I couldn't leave it anymore. By the end of the game I felt like I was the Fatebinder and any choice, whether inconsequential or storywise important, I had to make was important to me. My character's, and myself, opinion evolved throughout the game. Some foreshadowing kept me prepared for what was to come. The gameplay is fun, some find it too easy and in some ways it can be. But as a mage, I found the magic system so good, so rewarding and so fun to play around with. Each found sigil felt as a small shot of dopamine, each effective combination of sigils found was a reward in itself. I obliterated my foes but it never got stale. One problem I noted though, was the last Act, where some *really* cool mechanics are introduced but not really used much. (** SPOILER **) I was so satisfied when I used my first edict. Edicts were one of the best ideas in Tyranny's world building. It was mysterious yet omnipresent. It's only a shame it's used so little. In my choice path, I only got to use the first edict, which was active in 1 battle which lasted less than a minute. The 2 and last edict was narrative and didn't actually serve a gameplay purpose. (** END OF SPOILER **) Character development is good and I grew fond of my companions. There is not many "personal quests" such that you could find in some other RPGs, but the loyalty/fear system allows a lot of char/development in every situation where you make a choice. The art direction is great because the game looks good and consistent with ""simple"" graphics. I cannot recommend this game enough. And it made me want to try other CRPGs out there.

A masterpiece

The world, story, characters, dialogues and your choices, that shape them and bind them together, are masterfully crafted. The concept of how the good and evil are presented is really excellent. I hope they will make a sequel. The music is excellent. I listen to it even at work. The combat is challenging on higher difficulties, which I like. I really like the random encounters and D&D-style resolve situations. After a long time this is really an original game that put me to my gamer's trance and I could play till mornings. Do yourself a favour, play this gem and support game like this.
