If you're bad at games, this one you still might be okay at. DIablo 3 style topdown / art but also a more robust dnd style campaign. Story is a little weak but still engaging. Puzzles could probably be a bit more confusing, but still cool.
Its a surprise hit for me - free on GOG at the time, so nothing to lose.
I love so much about it not least the atmosphere.
The one thing I had heard was different was the combat, and when I encountered it for the first time I had a feeling of "oh whats this then, is it worth continuing with the game" actually because it was different and not what I expected.
But I did continue with it and I gotta say i'm glad that I did.
Combat is quite refreshing allowing more depth than regular clicky loot fests like Torchlight (which I loved by the way) - and I only now have got my third hero.
Just "drawing" a wall in the combat arena to block a life leeching beam or divert enemies away from your archer is one cool concept new to me - a nice extension on breaking line of sight from the attacker.
But the wall spell has an upgrade that allows a "low wall" so you can divert and yet not block line of sight so your archer can still fire shots over the barrier. ( and maybe the enemy can see too ) but can still divert other attacking paths.
There is a suprising amount of depth here to match the effort put into the atmosphere, lore and sound and yeah, I really love it.
Also I have just realised I can destroy un needed gear to get more gems in order to craft better stuff for my heroes.
That is slightly different too, and refreshing because while I had an idea what the gems would be used for, I was anticipating specific generic npc or shops that provided the service as is often the case.
But here, you can do this when you like as and when you need and that's just armour and weapons.
Some of the mechanics of game play are familiar an yet it does just enough differently to stand out from the others I have played in the genre and actually make you stop to consider your options.
I've been wanting to learn this style of game for a while because a streamer I watch plays them and I love watching them. When GOG offered me this game I thought, great, maybe this will be a good one to start with. Lucky me. This is a really good game. Graphics, artwork, lore, story, and sound are excellent. I wish all games had this high of an output level. I noticed the volume level for everything was only on half and my headphone volume on half is more than adequate. Usually, I have to have everything cranked. Enjoying this immensely, thank you so much GOG!
The settings, story and combat and very original and fresh, although not very enjoyable for me. The graphics are outdated and there is no way to enjoy the scale of environment because zoom level is very limited both in and out. There is no normal role-playing, the path is linear and the only deviations possible are either doing side quests or not doing them. Which is again dubious because you pass through the areas anyhow and the quests, or better called tasks, are short and a bit pointless. The story is passable.
Now, combat is a very original form of tower defense or more like a primitive Plants very Zombies variant with less complexity. There is no real way to plan and execute an attack and lots of mechanics are linked to positioning in real time, so it is not actually turn-based. There is no combat log, so it is often impossible to understand what is going on and who is attacked by what. There are quite a few enemies, up to a dozen or more, which you can barely see, doing something simultaneously. Some attacks are telegraphed while others come out of the blue. This makes it extremely hectic and based more on general perception than on rational thinking and assessment. It is not chess or D&D most certainly, but more like tetris or real time match-3 with some preparation involved. Some battles are tedious and pointless because later on, the heroes have enough mana and health regeneration to last indefinitely with proper clicking skills.
The character and gear growth system is a bit on the cumbersome side due to severely limited resources and frequent need to upgrade almost constantly. Majority of the items are random drops with some really unoriginal names and not overall exciting. Overall, the system is tedious and cumbersome to manage.
I got this game for free on GOG, so really should not be complaining. It runs well, does not crash and is actually not bad. However, the lost opportunities and design flaws irked me sufficiently to write this review.
